The SGI-Cray Mountain Blue system

SGI-Cray was the last company which was rewarded an ASCI contract from Los Alamos National Laboratory. By December 1996 a 256 processor system, based on the technology of the Origin 2000 should be delivered. As the maximum configuration of an Origin 2000 only contains 128 processors this first system is already beyond the machines delivered in the commercial program.

The configuration that should be installed in 1999 will contain 3072 processors. It has a planned theoretical peak performance of 3 Tflop/s which is equivalent to a peak performance of 1 Gflop/s per processor. This means that the processor speed should increase by a factor of 2.5 over the current 400 Mflop/s for the present R10000 processors.
