A collection manager lives on a file server; it's job is to maintain the collection and keep it up-to-date. It's similar to a mirroring tool, but a bit more sophisticated: instead of replicating a collection of files that exist at another site, it receives messages that inform it when new resources are published. It can then decide whether it wants to add that resource to its collection, and perhaps also remove the previous version of the resource. Each server can specify the criteria used to decide when to add or remove a resource from the collection.

In addition, the collection manager periodically checks each of its resources for integrity, using the secure hash and cryptographic signatures from the Catalog Server. If any of the resources have been damaged, they are removed and replaced with good copies. Missing resources can also be replaced.
