U.S. Department of Energy's
Accelerated Strategic Computing Initiative
- 5 year $1B program designed to deliver tera-scale computing capability.
- "Stockpile Stewardship" - safe and reliable maintenance of the
US nuclear arsenal in the absence of nuclear testing.
- Advanced computations, 3D modeling and simulation capability are viewed
as the backbone of the program.
- 1st machine is a single highly parallel 1.8 Tflop/s computer.
Intel Paragon based on 9000 - 200 Mflop/s Pentium to Sandia Labs by the
end of 1996.
- 2nd machine is a $93M system from IBM consisting of clusters of shared
memory processors. 3 Tflop/s system scheduled for December 1998 to LLNL.
- Remaining 3 machines will deliver capabilities in the 10-, 30-,
and 100- Tflop/s range.
