LAM is considered one of the best environments for development because of its extensive monitoring capabilities. The xmpi tool, which is distributed with LAM, allows visualization of message traces and examination of message queues in deadlocked programs. LAM also provides better I/O handling and fewer opportunities for orphaned processes than MPICH on networks of workstations.
