to provide pictorial or visual representations of those
data, particularly in support of correlative data
analysis. Despite the many advances in visualization
techniques for scientific data over the last several
years, there are still significant problems in bringing
today's hardware and software technology into the hands
of the typical scientist. A generalized approach to
data visualization is critical for the correlative
analysis of distinct, complex, multidimensional data
sets in the space and earth sciences. Different classes
of data representation techniques must be used within
such a framework, which can range from simple, static
two- and three-dimensional line plots to animation,
surface rendering, and volumetric imaging. Static
examples of actual data analyses illustrate the
importance of an effective pipeline in a data
visualization system.",

abstract = "The instrumentation technology behind data generators
in a myriad of disciplines is rapidly improving,
typically much faster than the techniques available to
manage and use the resultant data. In fact, an
onslaught of orders of magnitude more data from such
sources is expected over the next several years. Hence,
greater cognizance of the impact of these data volumes
is required. If adequate mechanisms for use of the
actual data that meet the requirements and expectations
of the scientific users of such data are not available,
then the efforts to generate and archive the data will
be for nought. Within the context of scientific
visualization, the role of data management can be
expressed by the need for a class of data models that
is matched to the structure of scientific data as well
[sic] how such data may be used. There are many
approaches to data management within visualization
systems. An understanding of the these [sic] mechanisms
yields important insight to the strengths and
weaknesses of various visualization architectures,
including scalability in data set(s) size, complexity
and diversity as well as ease of initial use. From such
a survey, recommendations for future research and
enhancements of current systems can be derived.",

mainly to the unavailability of local statistical
expertise, seriously jeopardizes the quality of new
medical knowledge. Data Explorer is a prototype expert
system that builds on the versatility and power of
existing statistical software, to provide automatic
analyses and interpretation of medical data. The system
draws much of its power by using belief network methods
in place of more traditional but difficult to automate,
classical multivariate statistical techniques. Data
Explorer identifies statistically significant
relationships among variables, and using power-size
analysis, belief network inference/learning and various
explanatory techniques helps the user understand the
importance of the findings. Finally the system can be
used as a tool for the automatic development of
predictive/diagnostic models from patient databases.",

abstract = "The instrumentation technology behind data generators
in a myriad of disciplines, whether observational or
computational, is rapidly improving, typically much
faster than the techniques available to manage and use
the resultant data. Appropriate data management
techniques coupled with the process or methods of
scientific visualization, or at least the technologies
that support them show promise and in helping to
address some of these problems. Consider browsing, for
example, in a role for feature identification by the
scientist/user to serve as guide in the data selection
process. To date, most efforts associated with data
browsing have focused on simple images with image data.
Unfortunately, these techniques are not applicable to
many classes of data or when more than one data set is
to be considered. By recalling that browsing is more of
a subjective process involving the human visual system
and that this is one of the origins of the notion of
scientific visualization as a method of computing, then
the utilization of visualization strategies for
qualitative presentation of data becomes a viable
approach. For browsing to be effective it must be
interactive with near-real-time system response. With
data sets of interesting size, e.g., [> or =] O(1 GB),
immediate interaction cannot take place on current
conventional systems (i.e., high- end graphics
workstations). Even though a 1 GB data set is
admittedly modest by today's standards, the access and
visualization of the entire data set or even a large
fraction of it place significant burdens on the
floating point and bandwidth capacities of the computer
system being employed. This idea can also be extended
to environments without high- bandwidth access to an
interactive system by considering the distribution of
compressed visualizations instead of data for
predefined access and browsing scenarios.",

abstract = "The climate of coastal Peru is ordinarily very arid.
Every few years this condition is disturbed by a
phenomenon called El Ni{\~n}o, characterized by an
ocean warming which appears off the coastlines of
northwestern Peru and southwestern Ecuador. Excessive
and severe rainstorms are the most disastrous
consequences of El Ni{\~n}o, and such storms can cause
great damage to human life, property, crops, and animal
life. An examination of daily data from 66 rainfall
stations in the Chiura-Piura region of northwestern
Peru from late 1982 through mid-1983 (before, during,
and after a major El Ni{\~n}o episode) yields
information on the mesoscale structure of these storms.
The data from the rainfall stations are typical of
observational data that are scattered at irregular
locations in two or three dimensions (i.e., data with
no notion of connectivity or topology). Clearly,
discrete realizations such as scatter plots are
straightforward. However, the application of continuous
realization techniques for qualitative visualization
(e.g., surface deformation or contouring for such
two-dimensional data) requires an intermediate step --
gridding, interpolation, krieging, etc. to define a
topological relationship between the locations of data
to form some type of mesh structure. From such a mesh,
then one could apply various conventional continuous
realization techniques. Several common methods are
considered, and the results of their application to the
study of the rainfall events are analyzed.",

combines the analytical features of a geographic

between GIS and visualization environments has
typically been a laborious and frustrating task, due to
differences in logical data models and data encodings

of proprietary data formats. We have developed a data
import facility that allows data to be mapped directly
from a variety of public sources directly into the
visualization environment, and also allows data from a
GIS to be mapped into the visualization system. Our GIS
is Arc/Info and our target visualization environment is
Data Explorer (DX). This presentation focuses on the
general process of matching the model and format
requirements of the two environments, and the specific
problems to be addressed when the GIS formats are
proprietary.",

abstract = "The complexity of parallel programs make them more
difficult to analyze for correctness and efficiency, in
part because of the interactions between multiple
processors and the volume of data that can be
generated. Visualization often helps the programmer in
these tasks. This paper focuses on the development of a
new technique for constructing, evaluating, and
modifying sophisticated, application-specific
visualizations for parallel programs and performance
data. While most existing tools offer predetermined
sets of simple, two-dimensional graphical displays,
this environment gives users a high degree of control
over visualization development and use, including
access to three-dimensional graphics, which remain
relatively unexplored in this context. We have
developed an environment that uses the IBM
Visualization Data Explorer system to allow new
visualizations to be prototyped rapidly, often taking
only a few hours to construct totally new views of
parallel performance trace data. Yet, access to a
robust library of sophisticated graphical techniques is
preserved. The burdensome task of explicitly
programming the visualizations is completely avoided,
and the iterative design, evaluation, and modification
of new displays is greatly facilitated.",

abstract = "Paleoanthropologists rarely discover complete and
undamaged vertebrate fossils. The original bones may
have been torn apart by carnivores, and the fossils
further broken down and scattered by geological
processes and weathering. A thorough study of specimens
generally requires reassembling the original fossil
shape as accurately as possible from the broken pieces.
Furthermore, since very few fossil fragments belong to
a single individual, paleoanthropologists often make
composite reconstructions, using pieces that come from
many individuals. Thus, reconstructing damaged fossils
is somewhat like solving a 3D jigsaw puzzle, in which
many of the pieces are missing or deformed. The authors
consider how the Computer-Assisted Anthropology system
helps paleoanthropologists reconstruct fossils
electronically by providing tools to display,
manipulate, and measure fossil specimens on screen. The
CAA system was built using IBM Visualization Data
Explorer, a toolkit for analysis and visualization.
Since the CAA system works with computed tomography
(CT) scans of the fossils, it can extract embedded
fragments nondestructively, using image processing to
segment out the matrix.",

Explorer, and IBM Data Explorer have been widely used.
But the inherent problems such as excessive memory
usage and low run-time efficiency have imposed
limitations for their use with large, time-dependent
data sets. For interactive visualization, efficiency is
more of a necessity than luxury. 4d2 is designed as a
high-performance interactive visualization tool for
time-dependent 3D CFD data on rectangular grids
containing multiple scalar and vector fields, as well
as for time-dependent 3D particle data. The
visualization functions include contour plot, vector
plot, slicing, iso-surface extraction, streamline
integration, particle displaying, and volume rendering,
as well as graphical user interface and animation
control for time-dependent data sets. Several features
distinguish 4d2 from other visualization tools. First,
it provides a rich set of visualization functions and
allows mixing of volume rendering with iso-surfaces,
streamlines, particles, and so on. Secondly, many
techniques are used to achieve extremely
memory-efficient and time-efficient run-time
performance: no data duplication is needed, hardware
alpha-buffering is used to do volume-rendering,
immediate graphics mode is used, and parallel
algorithms are used when multiprocessors are
available.",
