Gene - Here is a revised draft of the netlib notice. I have installed a new version of the netlib daemon here that can handle wilder input from users. (People are amazing; one guy asked, "send index 4 quadpack." That's what happens when word spreads by telephone!) Once the new version has soaked and once we get a few more items like Topelitz, PPpack, and the TOMS collection installed both here and Argonne, perhaps it will be time to put out another notice on the net. Thanks for the errata sheet. I hope other authors will do the same. In fact, I'd be happy to collect such errata in a "library" in netlib, so that somebody five years from now can still get errata. Life is fine with me; how about for you? The big news here is that Brenda is pregnant. I've started thinking actively about stuff from my thesagain, prompted by Paul Bash at UCSF is using my program. Best wishes Eric Subject: netlib You can now get mathematical software automatically by electronic mail. Send mail of the form: send qag from quadpack ... Here's some information which I hope you'll find useful. -GENE There are several convenient ways of using NAnet. 1. Sending messages to eveyone on the net 2. Sending a message to an individual 3. Sending a message to SIAM 4. Obtaining software 1. To send a message to EVERYONE, mail to NA@SCORE and everyone on the distribution list will be sent the message. To obtain the distribution list, send me a message. ( Those on ARPA net can FTP the file na.dis.) 2. To mail to an individual, send a message to na.@SCORE and the message will automatically be forwarded. Try your own name. Some addresses are quite complex so it's often easier to use this device. If you send a message to NA.golub@SCORE that will automatically be sent to me at NAVAJO. I DON'T GUARANTEE ANY ADDRESS IS CORRECT OR THAT ANY INDIVIDUAL WILL READ HIS/HER MAIL. 3. You can send mail to SIAM simply as SIAM@SCORE or NA.SIAM@SCORE. 4. Yon can get some software as indicated below. This effort is due to Jack Dongarra and Eric Grosse. 5. Other suggestions are welcome. 6. Thanks are due to Mark Crispin (MRC@SCORE) for setting up this system and helping to maintain it. GENE GOLUB Subject: netlib You can now get mathematical software automatically by electronic mail. Send mail of the form: send qag from quadpack to either: netlib@anl-mcs (on the Arpa/Csnet network) or: research!netlib (on the Unix network). This gets you the code for routine x in library y and all routines x calls. To get just x itself, say "send only ...." You can ask for several routines at once, and can make several requests, as in the mail: send i1mach r1mach from core send svd from eispack send only ssvdc from linpack If your request is all upper case, the returned code will be in upper case. Currently we offer routines from LINPACK, EISPACK, MINPACK, the special function library FNLIB, the book by Forsythe, Malcolm, and Moler, QUADPACK, golden oldies (like gaussq), Collected Algorithms of the ACM, and recent research codes (like biharmonic solvers). To get a table of contents: send index To get an index for a library y, append "for y." For advice on what routine to try, you still need a numerics expert; we're just trying to simplify code distribution. Comments are welcome. Richard Bartels (na.bartels) maintains an irregular title and abstract distribution service. He would appreciate electronic notices of preprints and technical reports. Send 1. title 2. list of authors 3. authors' addresses 4. abstract 5. means of requesting a copy of the work When enough (about 10-15) notices have come in, these will be posted to na.dis -Richard
