Revisiting gray box model learning and Kalman filtering with subspace
based model identification
11 June, 5pm
KU Leuven, Thermotechnisch Instituut
Aula van de Tweede Hoofdwet (01.02)

Abstract: In numerous industrial projects, engineers face the crucial
task of extracting physical parameters and signals from real-world
data. When employing gray box state space model learning, a key
challenge lies in generating reliable initial estimates to ensure
convergence towards precise parameter values. Similarly, in utilizing
Kalman filtering for signal reconstruction, a common obstacle is
selecting reliable covariance matrices to attain accurate
estimates. This presentation delves into how subspace-based model
identification can effectively address these challenges. These
solutions, relying solely on linear algebra, center on determining the
similarity transformation between various state space
realizations. Through both simulated and real data demonstrations, we
illustrate the efficacy of these approaches. Everyone is welcome to
attend in person.

Subject: Mathematics of Gas Transport and Energy, Germany, Oct 2024

We are pleased to announce the fourth edition of the international
conference "Mathematics of Gas Transport and Energy MOG 2024" on
October, the 10th and 11th, 2024, in Regensburg, Germany.

The two-day conference aims at connecting leading experts in applied
mathematics with leading stakeholders from the industry and the public
sector that are concerned with the transition of the energy system. It
aims at stimulating fruitful discussions between academic partners and
representatives from other sectors on today's broad challenges in the
energy sector, taking into account the transition from natural gas to
hydrogen networks, its coupling with electricity, and related topics.

More information and registration (until 15 July 2024) is available

The conference is organized by the German Collaborative Research
Center TRR154 ("Mathematical Modelling, Simulation and Optimization
using the Example of Gas Networks") funded by the German Science
foundation, see

their scientific, engineering, and commercial applications. HiPC 2024
will also explore programs that expand and enrich the conference
offerings, including workshops, tutorials, Birds-of-a-Feather
meetings, Student Research Symposium, and industrial sessions, which
provide increased professional opportunities to conference attendees.
Authors are invited to submit original unpublished research
manuscripts that demonstrate current research in all areas of high
performance computing, and data science and analytics, covering all
traditional areas and emerging topics including from machine learning,
big data analytics. Each submission should be submitted to one of the
six tracks listed under the two broad themes of High Performance
Computing and Data Science. Please see
for more details. Up to two best paper awards will be given to
outstanding contributed papers. Authors of selected high quality
papers in HiPC 2024 will be invited to submit extended versions of
their papers for possible publication in a special issue of the
Journal of Parallel and Distributed Computing (JPDC).
