Subject: Constantin Carath=E9odory Prize 2023: Prof. Sergeyev, Italy


Yaroslav D. Sergeyev (Distinguished Professor and Head of Numerical
Calculus Laboratory at the University of Calabria, Italy) was awarded
the International Constantin Caratheodory Prize for achievements in
the field of global optimization on July 12, 2023.

The Prize is assigned by the International Society of Global
Optimization every two years to an individual (or group of
individuals) for fundamental contributions to the theory, algorithms,
and applications of global optimization. This year the Prize is of
particular importance, as it is awarded in the year of the 150th
anniversary of the birth of Constantin Caratheodory.

The Award is the highest distinction of the International Society of
Global Optimization. It recognizes outstanding scientific results that
have stood the test of time. The criteria include scientific
excellence, innovation, significance, depth, and impact on the entire
field of global optimization.

The award was presented during the World Congress of Global
Optimization taking place from 10 to 14 July 2023 in Athens
(Greece). Prof. Sergeyev delivered a plenary lecture entitled
"Problems, methods, and applications in Lipschitz global
optimization". The !onstantin Caratheodory Prize is not the first
international distinction of Professor Sergeyev. He is EUROPT Fellow
(2016) and Laureate of the Pythagoras International Prize in
Mathematics (2010), Khwarizmi International Award (2017), and others.

Note: Constantin Caratheodory (September 13, 1873, Berlin - February
2, 1950, Munich) was a German mathematician of Greek origin. Known for
works on the theory of functions, calculus of variations, theory of
conformal mappings, and measure theory.

We are trying to gather information about all the parallel-in-time
software out there. If you have a few minutes, please fill in this
survey and add information about the software you're working on/you

The software does not need to be actively developed to be mentioned in
this survey, it does not have to be run on actual HPC system, or
follow any standards. If it is or was developed for research around
parallel-in-time integration methods, that is enough. We are
interested in everything from a simple Matlab script to a big
application code where a parallel-in-time method is only a small part
of the whole software.

Version 9.5.0 of deal.II, the object-oriented finite element library
awarded the J. H. Wilkinson Prize for Numerical Software, has been
released. It is available for free under an Open Source license from
the deal.II homepage at https://www.dealii.org/

The major changes of this release are:
- Substantial updates and extensions to deal.II's interfaces to other
libraries. This includes, in particular, the integration of Kokkos
additions and updates to the PETSc and Trilinos interfaces.
- Improvements to the matrix-free infrastructure
- Better support for non-matching grids
- Faster or more robust linear solvers and preconditioners
- Many changes to the CMake configuration system, as well as more
extensive use of modern C++ features
- A large number of updates to the tutorials and other documentation

There is a growing trend, and demand, for scientific and
evidence-based decision-making supporting defence and security at the
heart of government and industry. Mathematics is fundamental to these
two domains, providing a framework for understanding and solving the
varied and complex problems faced, and to model systems and
scenarios. As mathematicians we are in an ideal position to be at the
forefront of this requirement and are able to take a step back and
assimilate everything into a common language. One of the biggest
challenges for mathematicians is the ubiquity of the discipline =13
that the same maths can be used to solve multiple problems. This means
that it may not be immediately obvious to know what branch of
mathematics is best suited to addressing a particular problem and it's
not always straightforward to find a forum where you can get feedback
on the different mathematical techniques that could be applied. This
conference aims to bring together a wide variety of participants and
topics applying a variety of mathematical methods with defence and
security applications. The programme will include invited speakers,
presentations and poster sessions, as well as refreshment breaks for
informal discussions. It is aimed towards mathematicians, scientists
and engineers from both industry and academia, in addition to
government and military personnel who have an interest in how
mathematics can be applied to defence and security problems.

NUMA is a research division within the Department of Computer Science
of KU Leuven, with 15 permanent staff members and approximately 40 PhD
and postdoctoral researchers. NUMA (Numerical Analysis and Applied
Mathematics) develops numerical algorithms and software for
large-scale problems in science and engineering. Its research ranges
from algorithm design and analysis to software implementation and
applications in other scientific and engineering domains.

This position fits within an ongoing EuroFusion project on Theory,
Simulation, Verification and Validation (TSVV) of the neutral gas
module for plasma edge simulations. This project aims at developing
and implementing numerical methods that correct the approximate
macroscopic models in the high-collisional limit by a Monte Carlo
simulation of a limited number of kinetic particles. In particular, we
will develop multilevel asymptotic-preserving Monte Carlo particle
methods that gradually transition from fully kinetic to fully fluid
when adjusting the time step. The main algorithmic challenges in this
context are the development of appropriate source term estimation
procedures and boundary conditions for particles near the divertor.
The research will be carried out in an international team of numerical
analysts at NUMA, and fits within a long-standing and fruitful
collaboration with the fusion energy team at the Department of
Mechanical Engineering, led by professor Martine Baelmans.

Profile: Candidates must hold a PhD in Mathematical Engineering or
High Performance Computing (or equivalent). Candidates should have a
solid background in programming of scientific software and/or
high-performance computing. Candidates should have experience in
computational mathematics (e.g., numerical methods for differential
equations, simulation of stochastic processes and/or optimization).

computational algorithms, application software, programming, and
software tools toward extreme-scale simulations. We are now engaged in
a number of computing research and simulation initiatives that are
aimed at developing methods and applications for the next generation
of extreme-scale computing platforms. CoLAB is located in Lugano,
Switzerland, and is part of the Institute of Computing in the Faculty
of Informatics at Universita della Svizzera Italiana (USI).

Our research, which is funded by the DFG and SNSF, aims to develop
computational approaches that address basic issues posed by
large-scale analytics, deep analysis, and precise forecasts by
advancing and laying the groundwork for the next generation of
sparsified numerical methods. The algorithms suggested in this project
are based on an innovative combination of sparsified numerical linear
algebra and nonlinear optimization approaches for data-intensive
applications. The inherent determinism of these methods, combined with
high communication demands, necessitates the development of robust
approximation methods under extreme-scale computer science
conditions. This comprises scientific libraries that provide
high-quality, reusable software components for application
development, as well as increased resilience and portability.

We are looking for two PhD students. These positions offer a wide
range of research challenges at the forefront of technology
development, and involves the following key responsibilities:
- Enhance our CoLAB vision for identity and access computing services
and align with industry trends and continuous improvements that
enhance the scalability of numerical methods.
- Contribute to the design and the implementation of proof of concepts
and blueprints for Bayesian computing, parallel recursive selected

This Special Issue is a continuation of the previous successful SI
"Multiple-Criteria Decision-Making and Computational Intelligence:
Recent Applications".

Human decision-makers are guided by their own experience and
intuition. Multiple-criteria decision-making (MCDM) and the
application of mathematical methods significantly reduce the influence
of subjectivism and intuition in decision-making. Multi-criteria
decision-making is the process of choosing one alternative from a set
of available alternatives or, in some cases, involves ranking
alternatives based on a predefined set of specific criteria that
usually have different meanings.

Computational intelligence (CI) is based on the following three main
complementary techniques: neural networks, fuzzy systems, and
evolutionary computing. CI represents the mechanisms of intelligent
behavior in complex and changing environments; mechanisms that can
learn, adapt, etc.

Many real-world applications require to model the interaction of
multiple self-interested decision makers, whose decisions may depend
on each other. These non-cooperative multi-agent frameworks can either
be modeled as simultaneous or hierarchical games, leading to
(generalized) Nash equilibrium or bilevel problems =13 or even
combinations of the two. While classic theory and algorithms for these
classes of problems mainly deal with convex games with continuous
variables, many applications make it necessary to consider
mixed-integer quantities, which are very challenging to tackle both
from a theoretical and a numerical perspective. The aim of this
special issue is to extend and broaden both the theory and algorithms
for multi-agent optimization problems with mixed-integer
variables. Preference will be given to high-quality contributions with
a special emphasis on exact methods.

Skewed distributions are transversal and ubiquitous to all scientific
disciplines. They have captured the attention of many researchers, as
a deep understanding of their underlying probabilistic mechanisms is
crucial in many fields. The right choice of the probability
distribution for a non-normal stochastic process and the proper
interpretation of its parameters can be very challenging and of
enormous importance in fields such as physics, chemistry, biology, and
social sciences.

The guidelines for contributions to this Special Issue include (but
are not limited to) the following topics, which are divided into two
broad groups:

Methods and applications of skew distributions. New applications and
parameter interpretations of the main skewed distributions; Parameter
estimation and statistical developments; Advances in modelling and
simulations (i.e., Monte Carlo sampling) of processes in mathematics,

of real-world problems. They can also perform better in the prediction
of mathematical models. Therefore, it is very important to develop
effective numerical schemes as well as their rigorous numerical
analysis.

In light of the aforementioned regarding the significance of numerical
schemes and analysis, the potential topics for this issue include but
are not limited to the following: The construction of effective
numerical methods for solving differential and integral equations; The
convergence analysis of symmetric numerical schemes; The stability
analysis of symmetric numerical schemes; The dissipativity of
symmetric numerical methods; Iterative algorithms and their
