This book provides an introduction to modern topics in scientific
computing and machine learning, using JULIA to illustrate the
efficient implementation of algorithms. In addition to covering
fundamental topics, such as optimization and solving systems of
equations, it adds to the usual canon of computational science by
including more advanced topics of practical importance. In particular,
there is a focus on partial differential equations and systems
thereof, which form the basis of many engineering
applications. Several chapters also include material on machine
learning (artificial neural networks and Bayesian estimation).
JULIA is a relatively new programming language which has been
developed with scientific and technical computing in mind. Its syntax
is similar to other languages in this area, but it has been designed
to embrace modern programming concepts. It is open source, and it
comes with a compiler and an easy-to-use package system.
Aimed at students of applied mathematics, computer science,
engineering and bioinformatics, the book assumes only a basic
knowledge of linear algebra and programming.

Maths4DL Deep Learning for Computational Physics Conference, taking
place at University College London, from 4 to 6 July 2023.
Deep learning in physics represents a very active and rapidly growing
field of research. This shift in approach has already brought with it
many advances, which this conference aims to highlight. Recent
examples include PINNs, SINDy, symbolic regression, Fourier neural
operators, meta-learning, and neural ODEs to name a few. The
applications also embrace many disciplines across the scientific
spectrum, from medical sciences, to computer vision, to the physical
sciences. We believe that the next steps for machine learning require
a firm theoretical understanding and this conference will bring
together like-minded individuals to discuss current and future

By harnessing the properties of subatomic particles, quantum computing
(QC) has the potential to radically transform our capability to solve
extremely difficult decision-making and optimization problems for
which no efficient classical algorithms exist. The goal for this
program is to help build the next generation of QC researchers by
bringing together QC and optimization experts and students in an
inquiry-based learning environment. We will provide a concentrated
review of necessary prerequisite math, optimization, and classical and
quantum computing material, and the QC-specific curriculum will focus
on: foundations of QC, quantum optimization techniques, and advanced
QC topics and applications. Students will work closely with lecturers
to apply their learning by engaging in interactive seminars and labs.
Graduate and advanced undergraduate students highly motivated to learn
QC and optimization techniques are encouraged to apply. Experience in

Title: Normal Forms and Sparse Reconstruction for Networks
Supervisor: Tiago Pereira
Job description/Requirements: A network encodes a structure of
individual units (the nodes), together with the information of how
these units depend on each other. We project focus on qualitative
changes in the dynamics of networks as one or more parameters
vary. One can, for example, think about the emergence of steady state
points or periodic orbits, or the phenomenon whereby multiple cells in
a network start displaying identical dynamical behaviour
(synchronisation). Due to the nature of network structures, the
symmetries are often more "exotic" than compact groups; equivariance
of a dynamical system will often mean with respect to the action of a
finite monoid (i.e. a group without inverses) and the representations
in question will often be of semigroups. The project deals with such
normal form reduction to understand how collective dynamics appear
with such systems. When data is collected from such networks recent
evidence suggest that if one aims to enforce sparsity of the
reconstruction only the normal form of the network can be
recovered. In this case, the normal form may be a hypergraph instead
of a network. This project envision to classify these reconstruction
scenarios. The successful applicant will participate of a
collaborative effort being developed by the Brazilian team headed by
Prof. Tiago Pereira. A doctoral degree in Applied Mathematics,
Engineering or a related area is required, together with strong
background on dynamical reduction techniques, such as normal form
theory, Lyapunov-Smith reduction and center manifold
reduction. Candidates with proven skills in performing independent
scientific research and in programming for high performance computing

A position as PhD or Postdoc researcher in numerical analysis for
density functional theory is available at Stuttgart University,
Germany.
Starting date is 01.06.2023 or later and the position is for 3 years.
The project deals with certified a posteriori error estimations of
nonlinear eigenvalue problems arising in density functional theory
(DFT) of electronic structure calculation. The goal is to provide
guaranteed bounds of the error between the approximate energy and the
exact energy.
DFT models are dominantly solved using the so-called Self-Consistent
Field (SCF) iterations where a linear eigenvalue problem is solved at
each step within the SCF-iterative procedure. The estimator will be
designed such that each error component of the total error can be
quantified, namely the discretization error due to the planewave
discretization, the iteration error due to the non-converged SCF
iterations, and the error due to the iterative solver of the linear
eigenvalue problems. This splitting allows the design of an adaptive
algorithm with error balancing between the different error sources.
The estimator will be a guaranteed upper bound of the error for convex
DFT-models and the final goal will be the extension to non-convex
models. The developed methods and estimators will be implemented and
tested in the open-source DFTK software package, written in Julia.
