This work is framed within the Basque government funded Elkartek
project M-KONTAK, in which several agents of the Basque Science,
Technology and Innovation Network (including BCAM) are involved. The
purpose of M-KONTAK is the development of a multi-scale modelling
methodology to fundamentally understand the behavior of steels in
hydrogen-rich environments. In BCAM, we will be focusing on the
atomistic modelling of Hydrogen-induced embrittlement (HE), which can
significantly reduce the ductility and load-bearing capacity and cause
cracking and catastrophic brittle failures at stresses below the yield
stress.

The postdoctoral fellow will combine density functional theory with
kinetic Monte Carlo and/or Molecular Dynamics to simulate hydrogen
diffusion at steel grain boundaries, with the aim of extracting
kinetic and thermodynamic parameters that can be employed by our
partners in continuous phase field models to understand the influence
of morphology, temperature, and composition on HE at a microscopic
scale.

Tufts University has openings for a post-doctoral researcher to engage
in a cross-cutting project focusing on the development of machine
learning models and algorithms to advance precision medicine in the
area of anti- microbial resistance (AMR); i.e., the increasing ability
of bacteria, fungi, and other micro-organisms to develop resistance to
a range of antibiotics and other drugs. Current work is focused on
the development of combination therapies adapted to the specifics of
the case-in-hand. Such efforts lead naturally to a pair of related
learning problems: prediction of clinical outcomes from a given course
of treatment and determination of an optimal treatment strategy (which
drugs in which amounts as a function of time) to achieve a desired
clinical outcome both of which are hampered by the availability of
relatively small sets of data. The project will involve collaboration
with investigators with expertise in machine learning and signal
processing, basic cell biology and biological engineering, as well as
clinical immunology and infectious disease.

Applicants must have a PhD in electrical engineering, computer
science, applied mathematics, statistics, or a similar field. The
ideal candidates will have experience with and a publication record in
one or more of the following areas: modern methods of statistical
signal processing, machine learning, optimization, or data science.
Programming experience in Matlab or python is preferred.

Technician position in optimization hyperheuristics to work with Aritz
Perez in Machine Learning research line.

In some optimization problems the evaluation of a solution can be very
expensive, e.g., an accurate simulation of a complex physical
system. In this project we will develop hyperheuristic optimization
algorithms that control the number of evaluations. The hyperheuristic
will be a combination of a population heuristic algorithm and a
controller, which guides the evolution process of the solutions that
conform the population. The hyperheuristic algorithm will allow to
control the number of evaluations by means of two complementary
strategies: 1) train the controller on simplified versions of the
problem, e.g., simplified simulations of the physical system; and 2)
train the controller allowing a maximum number of evaluations during
the optimization process. The position of research technician is part
of the Elkartek project KONFLOT (KK-2022/00100). The project addresses
the problem of the design of floating wind turbines, and BCAM is in
charge of the design of optimization algorithms.

The Singularity Theory and Algebraic Geometry group in the Basque
Center for Applied Mathematics is looking for a PhD candidate to work
with Ilya Smirnov in the general area of local algebra. The research
area of the Fellowship will be local algebra, a branch of commutative
algebra that originates from the study of singularities of the system
of polynomial equations. More generally, it studies local rings from
the viewpoint shaped by singularity theory and algebraic geometry as
the results can be applied to local rings formed by the germs of
functions at a point. The specific project is to be determined in
discussions with the Fellow, the potential areas are multiplicity
theory and positive characteristic methods in commutative algebra.
Multiplicity theory is one of the oldest parts of local algebra, but
it recently had an influx of new ideas largely focused on Lech's
inequality. The inequality can be improved in various ways and this
work is yet to be fully completed. Positive characteristic methods
refer to the algebraic study of singularities over a field of positive
characteristic based on the use of the Frobenius endomorphism: there
are various classes of so-called F-singularities and an even greater
number of numerical invariants. This field is closely connected to
algebraic geometry, but it has also purely algebraic open problems.

The candidate should have a Master degree by the start of the
fellowship, but not at the time of the application. The length of the
position is 4 years.
