Subject: Release 1.3.0.0 of librsb, Sparse BLAS Software Library


The major release 1.3.0.0 of the "librsb" library for high performance
sparse matrix computations based on the "Recursive Sparse Blocks"
(RSB) format is out and available for download.

librsb is mainly for iterative methods implementors; it features cache
efficient, multithreaded sparse matrix-vector multiplication, and it
is especially fast in the symmetric and transposed variants. Many
options and further matrix operations are available.

Both Sparse BLAS and the own interfaces are supported (C/C++,
Fortran). You can also use librsb transparently in a Matlab-style
fashion via the GNU Octave `sparsersb` package and command, or in
Python via the `pyrsb.rsb_matrix` class inspired by `scipy.sparse`
classes.

This release improves SpMM operation performance considerably; it
introduces a new, class-based C++ interface; many minor improvements
listed on http://librsb.sourceforge.net/NEWS.TXT

The source code of librsb is LGPLv3 licensed.

This book proposes tools for analysis of multidimensional and metric
data, by establishing a state-of-the-art of the existing solutions and
developing new ones. It mainly focuses on the visual exploration of
these data by a human analyst, relying on a 2D or 3D scatter plot
display obtained through Dimensionality Reduction (DR). Performing the
diagnosis of an energy system requires identifying relations between
observed monitoring variables and the associated internal state of the
system. DR, which allows representing visually a multidimensional
dataset, constitutes a promising tool to help domain experts to
analyze these relations. This book reviews existing techniques for
visual data exploration and dimensionality reduction and proposes new
solutions to challenges in that field. In order to perform the
diagnosis of energy systems, domain experts need to establish
relations between the possible states of a given system and the
measurement of a set of monitoring variables. Classical dimensionality
reduction techniques such as tSNE and Isomap are presented, as well as
the new unsupervised technique ASKI and the supervised methods
ClassNeRV and ClassJSE. A new approach, MING for local map quality
evaluation, is also introduced. These methods are then applied to the
representation of expert-designed fault indicators for
smart-buildings, I-V curves for photovoltaic systems, and acoustic
signals for Li-ion batteries.

The Oden Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences at UT
Austin, Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), and Lawrence Livermore
National Laboratory (LLNL) are partnering to host Rising Stars in
Computational and Data Sciences, an intensive workshop for women
graduate students and postdocs who are interested in pursuing academic
and research careers. The workshop will be held April 20-21, 2022, in
Albuquerque, NM.

We are seeking nominations for outstanding candidates in their final
year of PhD or within three years of having graduated. We will select
approximately 30 women to come to Albuquerque for two days of research
presentations, poster sessions, and interactive discussions about
academic and research careers, with financial support for travel
provided.

I am writing to let you know we are organizing an NSF-funded REU
(Research Experience for Undergraduates) Site program at UMBC this
summer. This REU Site program is for Online Interdisciplinary Big Data
Analytics in Science and Engineering. It is a purely online program
open to students from the entire nation. The 8-week program will
include training in fundamentals of HPC software (MPI) and
productivity tools (SLURM) on large distributed-memory clusters with
CPUs and GPUs as well as Big Data Analytics applications like
Tensorflow, Keras and Horovod. Each student will be paid for $5,000
for participation and provided with opportunities to present their
work at conferences. We are looking for students from all STEM
disciplines and particularly also for students who are interested in
gaining Big Data, HPC and application experience.

WIAS is coordinator of the "Mathematical Research Data Initiative"
(MaRDI) within the German National Research Data Initiative (NFDI).
In the context of its research in the field of applied mathematics,
WIAS develops research software and uses and generates research
data. The research software has different levels of complexity - from
publication-accompanying scripts to internationally leading open
source software and codes in industrial projects. An important part of
the research results of WIAS is "formulated" in research software and
data. As an integral part of the research process, this software and
data are subject to the requirements for research as a whole. These
include the rules of Good Scientific Practice and the resulting "FAIR"
principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable).

To support the scientific projects of WIAS in this area, WIAS is
looking for an Research Software Engineer with interest in research
data management (m/f/d), (identification number 22/01). In the short
term, the work tasks consist primarily of setting up and structuring
services (continuous integration, issue handling, release management
archiving, etc.) and reproducible environments (predefined software
environments) for sustainable, quality-assured development of research
software on the basis of a locally operated Gitlab instance, as well
as supporting scientists in their use. The support includes, among
other things, training, hands-on consultation, and the production of
best practice documents.

In the medium and long term, in addition to the further development of
the structures and services described above, the focus is on the
support of software projects including open source software developed
at WIAS or with the collaboration of WIAS members. The focus is on
consulting on scientific software libraries and documentation tools,
on the implementation of FAIR principles in software development and
in research data management. The structured on-boarding/off-boarding
of scientists who start their work at WIAS or leave the institute is
to be supported, as well as the securing of their results available in
the form of software and research data. The same applies to
third-party funded projects.
