Subject: 2019 IMA Leslie Fox Prize Competition


The IMA Leslie Fox Prize is the pre-eminent prize for young
researchers in the field of numerical analysis. The prize is awarded
biennially. Entries for the 19th IMA Leslie Fox Prize competition
must be submitted by January 31, 2019. Any person who is less than 31
years old on January 1st, 2019 and has not already won a first prize
is eligible. Appropriate career breaks for applicants over the age of
31 may be taken into account.

The entries will be considered by an adjudicating committee comprising
Ben Leimkuhler (University of Edinburgh, Chair), Des Higham
(University of Strathclyde), and Carola-Bibiane Schonlieb (University
of Cambridge).

For the 2019 competition, the prize entries will be uploaded via the
web using a system that differs from that used in previous years. The
submission is a two-step process. All candidates must first register
(as early as possible, but with a strict deadline of Jan. 31, 2019,
15:00 GMT) using the form linked from the Fox Prize website, after
which they will be supplied with a link that can be used to upload
their paper (deadline for submission: Jan. 31, 2019, 23:59 GMT).

The next one-day meeting of the Pacific Northwest Numerical Analysis
Seminar (PNWNAS) will take place at the University of British

The Computing and Mathematical Sciences (CMS) Department at the
California Institute of Technology (Caltech) invites applications for
a tenure-track faculty position in the fundamental mathematics and
theory that underpins application domains within the CMS Department,
within the Engineering and Applied Sciences (EAS) Division, or within
the Institute as a whole. Areas of interest include (but are not
limited to) algorithms, data assimilation and inverse problems,
dynamical systems and control, geometry, machine learning, mathematics
of data science, networks and graphs, numerical linear algebra,

CMS is a unique environment where research in applied and
computational mathematics, computer science, and control and dynamical
systems is conducted in a collegial atmosphere; application focii

quantum computing, and robotics and autonomous systems. The CMS
Department is part of the broader EAS Division comprising researchers
working in, and at intersections between, the fields of aerospace,
civil, electrical, mechanical, and medical engineering, as well as in
environmental science and engineering, and in materials science and
applied physics. The Institute as a whole represents the full range of
research in biology, chemistry, engineering, physics, and the social
sciences.

A commitment to world-class research, as well as high-quality teaching
and mentoring, is expected. The initial appointment at the assistant
professor level is for four years, and is contingent upon the
completion of a Ph.D. degree in applied mathematics, computer science,
statistics or in a related field in engineering or the sciences.

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at the Technical
University Bergakademie Freiberg invites applications for a

Tenure-Track-Professorship for Applied Mathematics (W1-Tenure-Track
Leading to a W2).

The department wants to strengthen the research area of optimal
control of stochastic partial differential equations. Applicants
should have an excellent research record in one of the following
areas: Theory and numerical analysis of optimal control, numerical
analysis of partial differential equations, uncertainty quantification.
Great importance is attached to a close collaboration with the
Institutes of Applied Analysis, of Numerical Analysis and Optimization
and of Stochastics as well as to an interdisciplinary cooperation with
members of the natural science and applied science departments.

Teaching obligations include courses for students in mathematics and
other curricula of the university. The ability to teach in English and
German is required. The professorship is funded by the Federal
Ministry of Education and research thereby introducing a new career
opportunity for young researchers. Applicants are expected to have
changed university after graduation or to have worked scientifically
outside the TU Bergakademie Freiberg for at last two years.

Initially, the position will be assigned as a W1-professorship for
three years which after a successful evaluation will be prolongated

Job advertisement: The Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of the
Charles University, Prague opens two Postdoc positions within the
Primus Research Programme: "The interaction of fluids and solids" lead
by Sebastian Schwarzacher and Barbora Benesova.

Project description: Fluid solid interaction happens in many everyday
instances. For example in the trachea where the air-flow inside the
windpipe interacts with the cartilage surrounding it. The project
aims to systematically develop an analysis for the related theory of
partial differential equations. The scientific challenge is
sub-summarized in the free interface between the solid and the
fluid-the variable domain. Our objective is to advance the available
mathematical theory in fluid-structure interaction towards the
realistic case where both fluid and solid part are three-dimensional
objects.

Job description: The ideal candidate will have a strong background in
the analysis for non-linear PDEs. He is expected to strengthen the
team and, in particular, to apply/develop analysis or numerics to
fluid-structure problems studied within the project. Both positions
are for 2 years with the possible extension by another year. The start
of the position is earliest in January 2019 and latest in Mai
2019. The successful candidate will be hired by the Faculty of
Mathematics and Physics and receive a salary of 54000 CZK (around 2100
e) per month.

Postdoctoral Research Associate (3 years), Fast solvers for frequency
domain wave scattering problems and applications, funded by the UK
Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council

Applications are invited for this position, which is concerned with
the formulation, analysis, implementation and applications of fast
solvers for partial differential equations arising in acoustic,
electromagnetic and elastic wave problems, modelled in the frequency
domain. It will be particularly concerned with parallel domain
decomposition methods for solving the large ill-conditioned linear
systems that arise from typical applications, especially in seismic
inversion and in electromagnetics.

This appointment is part of a collaboration with University of
Strathclyde (Glasgow) and the EPSRC funding provides for the
appointment of two linked PDRAs, one at Bath and one with our partners
in Glasgow. The investigators are Ivan Graham, Euan Spence and Silvia
Gazzola at Bath and Victorita Dolean at Strathclyde.

Within the DFG Priority Program PP 2089 "Rhizosphere Spatiotemporal
Organisation - a Key to Rhizosphere Functions" we have an open
position in the section "Modelling and Simulation" at the Department
of Mathematics at the Friedrich-Alexander-University
Erlangen-Nurnberg. We are offering a PhD Postition in the field of
Reactive Transport and Structure Formation in Porous Media for three
years starting as soon as possible. Remuneration is according to the
salary rules of the public sector in Germany (TV-L E13), working time
is 75%. The interdisciplinary project deals with modelling and
simulation of multiscale processes for structure formation in the
rhizosphere, which is the region of the soil influenced by plant
roots. We use models on the basis of cellular automata and coupled

Required is an above-average master's degree in mathematics,
