Subject: Patrick Keast (1942-2016)
Patrick (Pat) Keast, retired professor, Department of Mathematics and
Statistics, Dalhousie University, passed away suddenly at his home in
Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, on July 25, 2016, at the age of 73. Pat
began his academic career in the Mathematics Department at St. Andrews
University and while an assistant lecturer there completed a Ph.D. in
Mathematics in 1967 under the supervision of Andrew (Ron) Mitchell. In
1970, he immigrated to Canada to take up a regular faculty position at
the University of Toronto (U of T), splitting his time between
teaching in the undergraduate program at the U of T Scarborough
College campus, and teaching graduate courses and supervising graduate
students at the U of T St. George campus. In 1983, Pat moved to
Dalhousie University (Dal) where he joined the newly established
Division of Computing Science in the Mathematics, Statistics, and
Computer Science Department. He completed his career in the
Mathematics and Statistics Department at Dal, retiring in 2007. During
his 24 years at Dal, he taught many undergraduate students, supervised
numerous graduate students in both mathematics and computer science,
and held several administrative positions, including Department Chair.

Subject: Mondriaan 4.1: Sparse Matrix Partitioning Package
We would like to announce the availability of version 4.1 of the
Mondriaan sparse matrix partitioning package. Mondriaan can be used as
a preprocessing tool for large parallel sparse matrix-vector
multiplications.
Version 4.1 contains several improvements and extensions:
- The MondriaanOpt program has been incorporated, which offers a way
to solve the sparse matrix bipartitioning problem to optimality.
- The MondriaanOpt program is available as stand-alone program, as a
Matlab routine, and as a linkable archive.
- MondriaanPlot can now also generate SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics)
images of partitionings.
- Some minor bugfixes.
The package and related documentation can be obtained from:

A database of optimal matrix bipartitionings for over 350 matrices
from the University of Florida collection can be found at:

model of the cardiac action potential propagation for crucial cardiac

stable high order methods with adaptivity in space and time, such as

development of the numerical algorithms is on the high performance
computing aspects of the methods: only methods that scale to hundreds
of thousands processors are considered and developed. We are looking
for a postdoc candidate that holds an excellent degree in scientific
computing or applied mathematics (or a related field). The successful
candidate should have a strong background in the development of
scientific simulation codes with excellent programming skills in
either Fortran 90 or C/C++. Experience in developing adaptive
simulation codes is desired as well as experience in high performance
computing. She/he will work on the development of an adaptive high
order simulation framework for compressible fluid dynamics with a
focus on high performance computing. Experience with the development

open in our group Alpines at Inria in Paris, France. The successfull
candidates will join NLAFET, a project funded by the European
Commission and involving Inria, Umea University, University of
Manchester and STFC/RAL. They will conduct research on iterative
solvers and robust preconditioners aiming at a significant reduction
of communication and thus suitable for future and emerging large scale
computers. The algorithms developed will be validated on several
applications targetted by NLAFET, such as computational fluid
dynamics, astrophysics and graph problems.
The candidates should have a PhD in applied mathematics or computer
science and expertise in numerical linear algebra and/or high
performance computing. For the graph theory subject, experience in

At the department of Computer Science of KU Leuven there is vacant PhD
position in the area of computational control and optimization of
large-scale interconnected systems.
The aim of the PhD project is to develop decentralized and distributed
control design approaches. For large networks it is expensive, if not
impossible, to control all systems individually. Furthermore, the
underlying theoretical framework is not adapted toward complex systems
where the overall dynamics are largely determined by the
interactions. Besides computing optimal controller parameters, the
focus is on optimizing the topology of the network, that is, to
determine which systems need to interact in order to optimize a global
objective in an efficient way. While the focus is on development of
computational methods, applications are foreseen in robotics and
sensor networks.
The PhD researcher will spend two years at KU Leuven and the final
year at Ecole Centrale de Lille, and she/he will be awarded a joint
doctoral diploma upon a successful completion.

Authors are invited to submit manuscripts which present original and
unpublished research in all areas related with complex problems
solving via parallel and distributed processing, i.e., works focused
on emerging solutions to face with big computing challenges on HPC
systems are specially welcome. Relevant topics include, but are not
limited to: Benchmarking, performance and scalability of algorithms,
data structures, tools; Code adapting to take advantages of latest
computational features; New strategies to improve performance;
Auto-tuning computing systems; New transparent, portable, and hardware
diagnostic programming paradigms; Advances in current or upcoming HPC
platforms; and Communication, synchronization, load balancing.

Author notification: April 28, 2017
Publication: June 30, 2017
Original and unpublished works on any of the topics aforementioned or
related are welcome. The SCPE journal has a rigorous peer-reviewing
process and papers will be reviewed by at least three
