Subject: Obituary: Jens Hugger

Jens Hugger, PhD, Associate Professor at Department of Mathematical
Sciences, University of Copenhagen, died on March 4, 2016 after
struggling with pancreatic cancer.

Jens grew up in Aalborg, Denmark. He received his Master degree in
Mathematics from Aalborg University in 1983, and a PhD from University
of Maryland in 1990 with Ivo Babuska as thesis advisor. In 1991 Jens
was employed as Assistant Professor (and from 1995 as Associate
Professor) at University of Copenhagen, where he served as head of a
number of study boards since 1996.

Jens taught and worked primarily in numerical analysis, specializing
in error estimation and adaptive mesh generation for the finite
element method. One of his key interests was the development of a
framework for pointwise error estimation. Since 2000 he was also
working in computational financial engineering and, in particular,
option pricing.

Jens was a very warm person and family man. He liked soccer and
football, and he loved traveling the world and meeting new cultures.
He is survived by his wife, Ada Scupola, and three children.

The OpenLB developer team is very happy to announce that a new release
of the open source Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) code is available
for download on the project website http://www.openlb.net. New
examples and models for particulate fluid flow simulations and many
user-friendly interfaces have been added. The performance of standard
3D models has been improved by up to 30 percent. Have a look and be
excited!

The annual Sparse Days meeting will be held at CERFACS in Toulouse on
30th June and 1st July 2016. These dates are one day later than
originally broadcast so that people can attend the VECPAR meeting
earlier that week in Portugal and also be able to attend the PMAA
meeting in Bordeaux the following week.

Because of this juxtaposition, the overriding theme will be one of
parallelism but as usual any talk that has an association with
sparsity is welcome. The default length for a talk plus questions is
30 minutes but a different time is negotiable.

Requests to speak (accompanied by a title and short abstract) should

The Pillar of Engineering Systems and Design (Singapore University of
Technology and Design), offers a two-year Postdoctoral Research
position in operational hydrology/geomorphology. The successful
applicant will collaborate with Dr. Stefano Galelli and Prof. Qihua
Ran (Zhejiang University) on the project "Engineered tools to control
soil erosion in large watersheds". Taking the Loess Plateau (China) as
study site, the project aims at (1) studying the impact of hydraulic
infrastructures (primarily check dams) on soil erosion, and (2)
developing an optimization-based decision- making tool for planning
the deployment of these infrastructures. The main areas of research
are (1) in situ experiments and numerical modeling (primarily carried
out at Zhejiang University), and (2) simulation-based optimization
(carried out at SUTD). The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in
engineering, science or applied mathematics, with a strong academic
background in hydrological processes/geomorphology and
optimization. In-depth knowledge of model reduction and emulation
(surrogate) modeling techniques is an asset. Further requirements
include excellent skills in programming (e.g., MatLab,
Python). Finally, the successful candidate must be comfortable with
both team and independent work, and possess a proven record of
scientific excellence, personal initiative, and advanced proficiency
in communicating scientific findings in peer-reviewed journals and at
professional meetings.

The position is available from May 1, 2016. Attractive working
conditions include a competitive compensation, funded short-term
visits at Zhejiang University and one international conference per

The Mathematics and Computer Science (MCS) Division at Argonne
National Laboratory invites outstanding candidates to apply for a
postdoctoral position in the area of uncertainty quantification and
data analysis for complex dynamical systems.

Uncertainty quantification for multiphysics applications and
assimilation of massive data sets obtained through direct observations
of real physical processes will be performed and analyzed by using
scalable algorithms. The appointee will conduct data assimilation and
statistical model building with the purpose of fusing numerical model
output and data, model calibration and validation. Applications
include power grid, climate and weather forecasting for energy
systems, and materials science. This position requires comprehensive
knowledge in one or more of the following: data assimilation,
stochastic processes, and computational/Bayesian statistics. Also
required is considerable knowledge in one or more of the following
areas: numerical algorithms and software for differential equations,
statistics, statistical mechanics, numerical optimization, and
numerical linear algebra. Good proficiency levels in scientific
programming languages (e.g., C, C++, Fortran) or Python are also
required. Experience with parallel computing and large-scale
computational science is a plus.

Subject: Special issue of EJAM on PDE for data modelling and analysis

We are excited to announce that a forthcoming special issue of the
European Journal of Applied Mathematics (EJAM) will feature research
articles that involve partial differential equations (PDE) used in
data science.

PDE models have found their way into the data sciences, in a variety
of ways. They are used directly, for example for data assimilation,
image processing, image analysis, shape analysis, inverse problems,
computer vision, and modelling complex phenomena such as crowd motion,
opinion formation, and option pricing. PDE ideas also serve as an
inspiration to formulate and solve data problems on graphs and
networks, such as in the use of graph-discretised PDE for various
classification and community detection problems, and in the
application of Gamma-convergence to link graph and continuum
variational classification models, which is crucial for analysing
these models and for understanding their scalability. Submissions on
these and related topics are invited for this special issue.

The peer review of submissions for this special issue will be in
accordance with EJAM's mission to focus on mathematical models
inspired by real-world applications, while at the same time fostering
the development of theoretical methods with a broad range of

Papers are due no later than 19 October 2016. Authors should lodge
