Subject: Sparse Days in St Girons III, France, Jun-Jul 2015

The conference Sparse Days in St Girons III will be held in St Girons
near Toulouse from 29 June to 2 July 2015. Previous conferences were
held in 1994 and 2003 and a similar pattern will be followed for this
meeting.

There will be sessions on the themes of the CIMI Semester workshops,
viz. low-rank approximations for high performance sparse solvers,
innovative clustering methods for large graphs and block methods,
parallel methods for time dependent problems, and advances in
optimization with application to data assimilation. Further
information on these can be obtained from other pages on the website
(http://cimi-semester-hpc.fr/).

You are invited to attend or to give a talk on any area relevant to
the title of the conference on topics not necessarily related to the
workshops. There will also be poster sessions.

The conference general chairs are Jim Demmel (Berkeley), Jack Dongarra
(Tennessee and Manchester), Iain Duff (CERFACS and RAL), and Patrick
Amestoy (INPT-IRIT, Toulouse). The local organizer chair is
Pierre-Henri Cros (IRIT).

More information is available from the website

Date: December 15, 2014
Subject: Innovative Clustering Methods, France, Jul 2015

In the context of the CIMI Semester on "High performance linear and
nonlinear methods for large scale applications", a workshop on
"Innovative clustering methods for large graphsand block methods" will
be held in Toulouse, France, from 6th to 8th July 2015.

The format that we plan for the workshop is for a few short
presentations, on the topics of the day, leaving a lot of time for
exchanges and discussions amongst participants. The central theme of
the workshop is to investigate clustering techniques in the context of
very large and sparse matrices, and the use of HPC to design efficient
algorithms.

Over the three days of this workshop, the foci we plan for each day
are: the first day will be on applications, describing various
disciplines that can benefit from clustering, and what type of
structure identification can be of interest depending on the
application; this can for instance address the use of specific block
structures in large linear system solvers, clustering in graphs with
applications, and pattern recognition using numerical structure; the
second day will focus on tools and kernels useful for clustering
algorithms, such as scaling, graph reordering techniques, and spectral
analysis; the last day will be devoted to tools for model reduction,
including for instance non-negative factorization techniques and rank
reduction techniques.

There are no registration fees for the workshop, but there is a limit
on the number of participants that can be accommodated. Expressions
of interest to attend or proposals (in the form of a one page
abstract) for a short 20mn talk, should be sent by January 31st 2015,
to either Daniel Ruiz or Sandrine Mouysset at IRIT
(daniel.ruiz@irit.fr or sandrine.mouysset@irit.fr), from whom further
information can be obtained. Notifications of acceptance will be
given by March 1st 2015.

A session of the conference "Sparse days in St Girons III"
(29/06/2015-02/06/2015) will be dedicated to the topics of this
workshop, and people interested in this area might also wish to attend
the conference. Full details of how to register for the conference are
available from the web page http://www.cimi-semester-hpc.fr.

Sandia National Laboratories has multiple openings for postdoctoral
positions in the general area of kinetic plasma simulation. Positions
cover the spectrum from algorithm development on heterogeneous
architectures to employing plasma simulation tools as instruments of
scientific inquiry. The methodologies are primarily collisional
kinetic descriptions. We employ a number of coupled approaches
incorporating particle-in-cell (PIC) techniques with collisional
approaches such as Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC). Our
applications are often complex and three-dimensional, requiring the
use of unstructured meshes on massively parallel platforms. We are
interested in both electrostatic and electromagnetic
descriptions. Physical processes of interest include discharge
phenomena (e.g., vacuum arcs, glow discharge, microscale breakdown),
plasma shock events (e.g., laser-supported detonation or laser-induced
breakdown spectroscopy), and basic plasma science such as sheath
structure and evolution.

Our plasma modeling community has diverse goals and interests ranging
from basic research to applications impacting national security. We
regularly employ multiple postdocs and students and provide an
exciting and engaging environment.

Subject: PhD Position, Applied Maths, Maxwell Institute, HWU, Edinburgh

The Maxwell Institute for Mathematical Sciences and the Department of
Mathematics at Heriot-Watt University are looking for highly skilled
PhD candidates for a prestigious James Watt scholarship available in
the field of Complex and Strongly Heterogeneous Systems.

Project title: Efficient and reliable, mathematical and computational
framework for transport in complex multiphase materials forming
strongly heterogeneous environments

Some basic steps in the project:
- The mathematically investigation and study of physical models for
general Complex and Highly Heterogeneous Systems such as porous
materials, batteries, fuel cells for instance. A central question is
what is common in different heterogeneous systems and what is
essentially different.
- As heterogeneous systems generally induce high dimensional
multiscale problems, we shall apply rigorous and systematic
upscaling and asymptotic methodologies for the derivation of
effective (lower dimensional) and reliable models.
- The quality of these lower dimensional formulations shall then be
analyzed by deriving error estimates which we shall also confirm
computationally.
- We shall compare the high dimensional formulation with the new
effective formulation by computations in Matlab/Python for instance.
- Finally, we shall analyze the reliability and efficiency of the new
mathematical and computational framework with specific applications
such as neurons (e.g. synapses), batteries, fuel cells, and porous
materials for instance.

Applications should be sent electronically in ONE PDF file (max. 5 MB)
to Dr. Markus Schmuck, M.Schmuck@hw.ac.uk.
