Subject: Call for HPC-cloud based application experiments

The Fortissimo project (EU FP7 contract 609029) is funding a set of
experiments (sub-projects) to drive the creation and demonstrate the
business potential of an HPC-Cloud service ecosystem. Additional
application experiments are sought to complement (i.e addressing
different areas from those experiments already funded) and to extend
current project activities. These experiments should be driven by the
business needs of manufacturing SMEs.

The principal objective of Fortissimo is to enable European
manufacturing, particularly SMEs, to benefit from the efficiency and
competitive advantage inherent in the use of simulation through the
provision of simulation services running on an HPC cloud
infrastructure. Fortissimo will make advanced simulation accessible to
industrial users, particularly SMEs, through the realisation of a
"one-stop shop" where hardware, expertise, applications, visualisation
and tools are easily available and affordable on a pay-per-use basis.

Fortissimo seeks new application experiments which will investigate
and demonstrate the provision of simulation services in the Fortissimo
HPC Cloud that are driven by the business needs of manufacturing
SMEs. Priority will be given to proposals for experiments which
complement the activities already included within Fortissimo and which
address the needs of engineering and manufacturing SMEs. Proposed
experiments should involve all participants necessary for the
experiment, which may include HPC experts, HPC Centres or ISVs already
included within the Fortissimo consortium. Experiments will employ the
Fortissimo HPC infrastructure using the HPC Centres already involved
in the project.

Call closure: June 18th 2014 at 17h00, Brussels local time. Foreseen
budget: for the Call: up to 2 M Euro funding for new beneficiaries;
the funding for individual experiments should not exceed 250 K Euro.

Experimental Mathematical Computation", July 21-25, 2014. Topics

functions, formal methods and other areas.

Meeting the performance, energy-efficiency, and resilience
requirements of systems and applications at all scales from embedded
to exascale will require rapid, accurate, and dynamic evaluation of
tradeoffs. To provide these capabilities, significant advances in
predictive modeling and simulation methods are needed. Models are key
tools in the area of application/system co-design. As applications and
systems evolve, models must be able to track ongoing complex changes
and predict the impact of developments in both software and hardware
design.

As part of the process, we solicit community input, in the form of
position papers that describe novel research approaches for
performance modeling and simulation at extreme scales. Position papers
should address one or more of the following areas.
1. Integrated Modeling and Simulation of Performance, Power and
Reliability.
2. Standards, Integration, and Interoperability of ModSim
Methodologies and Tools.

The Organizing Committee will review these position papers and invite
selected contributors to participate in the workshop to be held on
August 13-14th, 2014, in Seattle, WA. Responsive submissions will be
made public via the workshop website and selected papers may be
included in a post-workshop proceedings, if the decision is made for
publication of proceedings.

Workshop on 'Optimization and Inverse Problems in Electromagnetism'
(OIPE) series will be held in the historical city of Delft, The

The aim of this workshop is to inform and to exchange ideas on recent
developments in optimization and inverse problems in computational
electromagnetic fields. Emphasis lies on design and optimization of
electromagnetic devices such as machines, transformers, actuators and
measurement equipment used in various applications. The workshop
offers a forum for engineers, mathematicians and physicists to meet
and to discuss theoretical aspects, methodologies and industrial
research activities in electromagnetism.

Continuous Media with Microstructure (CMwM2015) which will take place

CMwM2015 is organized in memory of Professor Krzysztof Wilmanski who
regrettably passed away on 26 August 2012. Paying tribute to this

PhD position "Computational methods for nonlinear eigenvalue problems
and eigenvalue optimization, with applications in control and
structural dynamics"

Nonlinear eigenvalue problems of a high current interest,primarily in
numerical linear algebra and scientific computing (e.g. in the context
of solving partial differential equations). Important developments
have also taken place in engineering, in particular systems and
control, and in physics.

The Numerical Analysis and Applied Mathematics Section of KU Leuven
has gained key expertise on iterative methods for solving eigenvalue
problems that are nonlinear in the eigenvalue parameter. The aim of
the PhD research is to advance the state-of-the-art in two
complementary directions. The first one is on eigenvalue
optimization. The optimization problems stem from the analysis of
eigenvalue problems with uncertainty and from the synthesis of
controller or design parameters. Applications are mainly envisaged in
systems and control and in structural dynamics, in the framework of
the Optimization in Engineering Centre OPTEC. The second direction is
on computing and optimizing eigenvalues where the nonlinearity is not
only in the eigenvalue but also in the eigenvector. The eigenvector
nonlinearity can be inherent to the problem, as in quantum physics
problems, but may also arise in computational schemes for solving
matrix distance problems.

A 24-month PhD position is available in the Geophysics and
Geoinformatics Computing Group, TU Bergakademie Freiberg. The PhD

methods to very large geographical data sets.

The candidate should hold a master’s degree in mathematics,

At the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), a PhD
scholarship on Numerical methods for fast and accurate simulation of
multi-material flows is available at the Division of Fluids
Engineering, Department of Energy and Process Engineering, Faculty of
Engineering Science and Technology. The PhD project is a part of a
larger research project entitled SIMCOFLOW - a framework for complex
3D multiphase and multi physics flows carried out by SINTEF Materials
and Chemistry, Trondheim, from July 2014 until June 2017 and funded by
the Research Council of Norway. The objective of the SIMCOFLOW
research project is to develop an open source code for the simulation
of complex multiphase flows and fluid-structure interactions.

The PhD project will involve one or more of the following research tasks:
- Improved numerical discretization of the transport part of diffuse
interface models for multi-material flows.
- Improved numerical discretization of stiff source terms due to
relaxation terms in the multiphase flow models.
- Development, implementation and evaluation of entropy-stable methods
for multiphase flow models.
- Development, implementation and evaluation of numerical methods for
multi- material flows at all Mach numbers.

The project is fundamental in nature and the successful candidate
should hold a master's degree in applied mathematics, physics,
mechanical engineering or similar. Very good proficiency in fluid
mechanics and/or numerical methods for partial differential equations
is required. Proficiency in the GNU/Linux environment is an
advantage. Excellent communication skills in scientific writing and
oral presentation are needed. The candidate is expected to make
fundamental scientific contributions in applied mathematics and/or
numerical analysis in collaboration with an group of active
researchers in the field. The PhD position is limited to 3 years.
