Subject: New Book, Complex Approximation Theory

NEW MONOGRAPH BY GEORGE ANASTASSIOU:
"TOPICS IN COMPLEX APPROXIMATION"
CAMBRIDGE SCIENTIFIC PUBLISHERS, 150 pages.
ISBN 978-1-908106-21-6

In this short monograph we study quantitatively the order of
simultaneous approximation and Voronovskaja type asymptotic results
for complex Bernstein-Schurer, Kantorovich-Schurer and
Bernstein-Durrmeyer polynomials related to analytic functions on
compact disks. In this way the overconvergence phenomenon for
Bernstein-Schurer and Bernstein-Durrmeyer polynomials is revealed. We
continue with explicit quantitative estimates for the overconvergence
in the complex plane of the partial sums of the Fourier-type
expansions on [-1,1] with respect to Chebyshev and Legendre orthogonal
polynomials. Furthermore we obtain quantitative estimates in the
overconvergence phenomenon for the classical and generalized singular
integrals of Gauss- Weierstrass, Poisson-Cauchy and Picard on a
strip. Next we deal with the approximation of multi-complex Picard,
Poisson-Cauchy and Gauss-Weierstrass singular integrals using the
modulus of continuity on polydisks. We continue with quantitative
estimates in the overconvergence phenomenon on polystrips, for the
weighted and non-weighted cases, for multivariate singular integrals
of Picard, Poisson-Cauchy and Gauss-Weierstrass types. Furthermore we
present Jackson type approximation results by generalizations of
multi-complex Picard, Poisson-Cauchy and Gauss-Weierstrass singular
integrals in terms of higher order moduli of smoothness on
polydisks. It follows quantitative estimates in the overconvergence
phenomenon on polystrips, for the weighted and non-weighted cases, for
generalized multicomplex singular integrals of Picard, Poisson-Cauchy
and Gauss-Weierstrass types.

An industry funded PhD position is available at the Institute of
Petroleum Engineering, Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh

Uncertainty quantification group is looking for a PhD candidate for
the industry funded on making justified reservoir prediction by making
the best use of models of different complexity. Reservoir model
descriptions vary by the level model complexity, choice of parameters,
grid resolution. The ultimate challenge is to find dependencies
between the predictions made with different model descriptions; and
then use these dependencies to make faster and more effective history
matching and more robust uncertainty quantification. It is also
essential to identify the model descriptions that are more likely to
history match faster and to provide more reliable inference. The
project will involve data mining and use of machine learning
techniques to find dependencies in the space or model responses.

The successful candidate must have a degree in computer science or
statistics and possess a good knowledge of Bayesian and machine
learning methods as well as optimisation techniques. Strong
computational skills and experience in recent advances in machine
learning is essential. The candidate should be keen on extending
knowledge and applying new concepts in the petroleum context and
should demonstrate active team work and knowledge exchange with
colleagues from different disciplines.

The Uncertainty Quantification group at Heriot-Watt research is
focused on development of novel approaches for justified and realistic
forecasting of the petroleum reservoir performance, based on
quantifying uncertainty along the modelling workflow. The research
carried out by the team addresses various aspects of uncertainty
quantification using a wide range of approaches, including stochastic
optimisation methods, geostatistics, machine learning, Bayesian
statistics, and employs high-level scientific computing.
