Version 7.1 of deal.II, the object-oriented finite element library
awarded the J. H. Wilkinson Prize for Numerical Software, has been
released. It is available for free under an OpenSource license from

Boussinesq equation on hundreds or thousands of processors

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS
Richard C. DiPrima Prize
The Richard C. DiPrima Prize is awarded every two years to a junior
scientist, based on an outstanding doctoral dissertation in applied
mathematics.
The prize will be awarded at the 2012 SIAM Annual Meeting to be held
July 9- 13, 2012, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The award consists of a
hand- calligraphed certificate and a cash prize of $1,000. Travel
expenses to the award ceremony will be provided by SIAM.
Candidates for the prize must have completed their doctoral
dissertations and all other requirements for their doctorates during
the period running from three years prior to the award date to one
year prior to the award date. For the 2012 award, the eligibility
period is July 1, 2009 to June 30, 2011. The doctorate must have been
awarded at least eight months prior to the award date. The
requirements for the doctorate must have been equivalent to those for
an American doctorate.
A letter of nomination, along with a copy of the dissertation, should
be addressed to Professor Robert D. Skeel, Chair, DiPrima Prize
Committee and sent by OCTOBER 15, 2011, to J. M. Littleton at

efficiency and accuracy with the well-studied numerical algorithms for
the solution of initial value ODEs. Moreover, various a posteriori
error estimators are presented which can be used in adaptive
algorithms as important building blocks. The new class of EDS and TDS

results presented in the highly respected books of the Russian
mathematician A. A. Samarskii. It is shown that the new Samarskii-like
techniques open the horizon for the numerical treatment of more
complicated problems.

Hybrid symbolic-numeric computation methods have been gaining
considerable prominence recently. Algorithms have been developed that
improve numeric robustness using symbolic techniques. Semidefinite
programming is being employed in solving finding real roots of
polynomials systems. Traditionally symbolic algorithms have seen
speed improvements from adaptation of numeric methods. There is an
emerging approach of characterizing, locating, and solving
``interesting nearby problems''. Many novel techniques have been

The 2 day, bi-annual BIT Circus(the Nordic descendant of the many U.S.
circus, fair and rodeos) will take place Thursday August 23 and Friday
August 24 2012 at the Technical University of Denmark in Lyngby,
Denmark. Plenary lectures will be presented by Prof. Rasmus Bro
(Copenhagen University) and Prof. Jan Hesthaven (Brown University).

main idea is that younger researchers present their on-going work --

The circus is free of charge, including "simple" accommodation for

The sought-after candidate is an outstanding expert in applied
mathematics with special focus on numerical methods for complex
mathematical models in science or engineering applications. Major
topics of research could be but are not restricted to stochastic
methods, uncertainty quantification, high-dimensional, non-local or

Postdoc Job Opportunities:
1) Mathematical Biosciences Institute (MBI) is accepting applications
for Postdoctoral Fellows to start September 2012.
MBI Postdoctoral Fellows are immersed in the topics of the MBI
emphasis year programs (see http://mbi.osu.edu). Postdoctoral Fellows
engage in a three-year integrated program of tutorials, working
seminars or journal clubs, and workshops, and in interactions with
their mathematical and bioscience mentors. These activities are geared
toward providing the tools to pursue an independent research program
with an emphasis on collaborative research in the mathematical
biosciences. MBI facilitated activities for Postdoctoral Fellows are
tailored to the needs of each early career scientist.

2) Mathematical Biosciences Institute (MBI) is accepting applications
for Early Career Awards during the 2012-13 year on Mathematical
Neuroscience.
Early Career Awards enable recipients to be in residence at the
Mathematical Biosciences Institute for stays of at least three months
during the Emphasis Year Program. The 2012-13 Program is on
Mathematical Neuroscience (see
http://mbi.osu.edu/2012/scientific2012.html). Awardees will engage in
a workshops tied to the scientific theme and are expected to interact
with local and visiting researchers.
Early Career Awards are aimed at non-tenured scientists who currently
have continuing employment and who hold a doctorate in any of the
mathematical, statistical and computational sciences, or in any of the
biological, medical, and related sciences.
An Early Career Award will be for a maximum of $7,000 per month of
residency and for a maximum of nine months during the academic year,
the award may be used for salary and benefits, teaching buyouts,
and/or local expenses.

consideration. The applicant should state the period that he or she
would plan to be in residence.

A PostDoc fellowship is available at MOX - Dipartimento di Matematica
- Politecnico di Milano, Italy, in collaboration with the cardiology
and radiology divisions of Hospital S. Maria del Carmine of Rovereto
(TN), Italy. This position will be for 1+1 years. The project
concerns the development of computational models for human
elctrophysiology, calibration and validation with clinical data
provided by clinicians, application to ventricular dissincrony
diagnosis and resynchronization therapy. Suitable candidates should
hold a PhD in applied mathematics, physics, or engineering. A good
practical knowledge of numerical methods is required, in particular
finite elements. He/she should also have strong skills and passion
for scientific programming and for comparison with experimental data
and is expected to take a key role in collaboration with medical
doctors.
