Subject: Archimedes Method

Dear Colleagues,

An article about the modern consequences of Archimedes' fundamental
work "the Method" is available: http://scmsa.eu/archives/archimede.htm

The Method was lost for more than 2000 years; it is part of the
"palimpsest" which was rediscovered in 1906 in Constantinople.

The article is not historical, but deals with present and future
applications of the "Method".

Subject: SIAM, Nonlin Waves & Coherent Struct, USA, Jun 2012

http://www.siam.org/meetings/nw12/

Theoretical aspects of applied mathematical research on nonlinear
waves and coherent structures are relevant to subjects as diverse as
general relativity, high-energy particle and plasma physics, fluid and
solid mechanics, nonlinear electrical circuits, Bose-Einstein
condensation, nonlinear optics, random media, atmosphere and ocean
dynamics, chemical reactions, and biology. Remarkable agreement
between theory and experiments can be claimed in many of these fields.

The goals of NW12 are to provide a forum for the development of
mathematical methods and tools, to foster cross-fertilization among
different fields of application, and most crucially to enable
communication between the mathematicians who build the theory and the
scientists who use it. The conference program will consist of
presentations on subjects ranging from basic mathematical research to
concrete applications.

The conference will also host the inaugural Martin Kruskal Lecture.

Subject: CFP: Spectral Theory of Tensors and Its Applications

NUMERICAL LINEAR ALGEBRA WITH APPLICATIONS, CALL FOR PAPERS
Special Issue on The Spectral Theory of Tensors and Its Applications

Over the last few years, there has been a realization that there is a
reasonably complete and consistent theory of eigenvalues and singular
values for tensors of higher order, proposed by Lim and Qi
independently, that generalizes the theory of matrix eigenvalues and
singular values in various manners and extent. We will use the term
"spectral theory of tensors" to refer to this body of work.

This special issue will be opened to all papers with significant new
results where either existing notions of tensor eigenvalues or
singular values play an important role. Papers must meet the
publication standards of Numerical Linear Algebra with Applications
and will be refereed in the usual way.

Areas and topics of interest for this special issue include, but are
not limited to: Foundational Issues; Algorithmic and Numerical Issues;
Tensors with Special Structures; Modelling and Applications

Completed papers should conform to the journal's style and to the
instructions for authors, which can be found on the journal's homepage
under "For Authors". Papers have to be submitted online via the
journal's homepage to http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/nla under
"Online Submission". Authors must input the name of the special issue
as "ST-Tensor". Each submission must be clearly identified as a
submission for this special issue.

- Manuscript due: 31 December 2011
- First review completion: Mid 2012
- Anticipated publication date: End of 2012
