Subject: Query about introductory texts for linear algebra

Hi:

I am in the process of upgrading an introductory linear algebra
course. I am looking for a text that is readable, visual,
application oriented with plenty of examples as well as seamless
integration with Matlab. Course management systems and online
support material and applet-based expositions are a plus.

Any pointer is appreciated. maesumi@gmail.com

Subject: New Book, Software Automatic Tuning

The following book is published.

Software Automatic Tuning:
>From Concepts to State-of-the-Art Results

Eds: Ken Naono, Keita Teranishi, John Cavazos, Reiji Suda

http://www.springer.com/engineering/circuits+%26+systems/book/978-1-4419-6934-7

It is well known that carefully tuned programs run much faster
than ones consisting of simply written code, and sometimes the
difference of speed is more 100X. To make things more complex,
well-tuned code for some machines performs badly on
others. "Automatic Performance Tuning" is a technology paradigm
that enables software to tune itself to its environments so that
it performs well on any computer, even on computers unknown to
the programmer. This book summarizes the research efforts to date
and state of the art of automatic performance tuning. Software
developers and researchers in the area of scientific and
technical computing, optimized compilers, high performance
systems software, and low-power computing will find this book to
be an invaluable reference to this powerful new paradigm.

Subject: Reader/Senior Lecturer position in OR at Southampton, UK

Reader/Senior Lecturer in Operational Research/Management Science
University of Southampton - School of Mathematics/School of Management

£45,155 - £55,535 per annum

The LANCS Initiative (see http://www.lancs-initiative.ac.uk) is a
£13 million project to expand UK research capacity in the
foundations of Operational Research (OR). LANCS is a
collaboration between four of the leading OR research groups in
the UK (Lancaster, Cardiff and Nottingham are joined with
Southampton in the Initiative).

Benefiting from their position within the research-oriented
culture of a Russell Group University, the Schools of Management
and Mathematics are seeking to consolidate strength in
Operational Research/Management Science (OR/MS). Through the
LANCS Initiative, three excellent appointments have already been
made at Lecturer level. Applications are now invited for the post
of Reader/Senior Lecturer in OR/MS. All four of these posts are
joint appointments between the two Schools.

You should have a PhD in OR/MS or a related discipline, and an
established high-quality research track record, ideally including
successful research grant applications. You will be expected to
have research expertise (and future research plans) closely
aligned to one of the research themes of the LANCS Initiative,
currently Healthcare, Transportation and Logistics, Optimisation,
Heuristic Understanding, and Systems to Build Systems. We
particularly welcome applicants with research interests in
developing new methodology that is applicable to actual practical
problems.

Experience of teaching, assessment of students and dissertation
project supervision is essential. Duties, as determined by the
Heads of the Schools of Mathematics and Management, will include:
conducting research at international level in OR/MS; applying for

externally funded research grants; actively contributing to the

research activities of the LANCS initiative; and teaching

undergraduate and postgraduate students including the supervision
of research students. As part of the role, you will also be
expected to support the effective management and administration
within the two Schools, including helping to support the junior
LANCS staff.

The position is available from 1 February 2011 or as soon as
possible thereafter.

Interviews are expected to be held in mid January 2011. As part
of the interview process, candidates will be invited to give a
research presentation.

Informal enquiries can be made at any time to:

Postdoctoral Research Associate in Computational Fluid-Membrane
Interaction
Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge

We are seeking a post-doctoral researcher to join our team on
fluid-membrane interaction with applications to
micro-air-vehicles and insect flight. The primary task of this
position will be the development of scalable solution algorithms

of systems, which rely on the two-way interaction between fluid
flows and membranes.

The ideal candidate will have a PhD in Applied Mathematics,
Computer Science, Computational Mechanics or a closely related
field with an emphasis on parallel solution algorithms.
Experience with massively parallel computing, domain
decomposition techniques, parallel programming with Petsc or
MPI, and software development with C/C++ is preferred.

The starting date is as soon as possible but not later than
February 1, 2011. Please send application documents, including
cv, representative publications and the name and address of two
academic referees, to Dr Fehmi Cirak (f.cirak@eng.cam.ac.uk).
