New book, An Analysis of the Finite Element Method, 2nd Edition

An Analysis of the Finite Element Method, Second Edition
Gilbert Strang and George Fix
Wellesley-Cambridge Press (wellesleycambridge.com) and SIAM
May 2008, 414 pages, Hardcover, ISBN 978-0980232707, $80

I am very happy to announce the Second Edition of Strang/Fix (35 years
after the First Edition!). The original book is included in its entirety.
The new Part II makes clear each step in using the finite element method:
Weak form of the equation, choice of trial and test functions, assembly
of the stiffness matrix K (including MATLAB codes), and solution of KU=F.

The book explains the three leading forms of finite element computations:

1. The displacement method (assembled from element matrices)
2. The mixed method for velocity and pressure (and the inf-sup condition)
3. The Discontinuous Galerkin method--conservation laws & flux functions

There are suggested exercises taken from the new book Computational Science
and Engineering (also published by Wellesley-Cambridge Press and SIAM).
I hope you have noticed that book, written to help move the teaching and
learning of applied/computational mathematics away from formulas to ideas.
The finite element book focuses on one exceptionally successful approach --
a great achievement of the whole community of computational mechanics.

Contents and ordering information for both books are on math.mit.edu/cse
and www.wellesleycambridge.com and siam.org

Registration deadline: 23 May, 2008.

Web site: http://www.cerfacs.fr/algor/

As announced earlier, the "Sparse days at CERFACS" will be held at CERFACS
this year on 23rd and 24th June 2008.

Although as usual there will be no registration fee, you should register
beforehand with Nicole Boutet (boutet@cerfacs.fr). This must be done
by our deadline of 23 May as we will choose our room based on the number
of attendees.

You should also let Nicole know if you want to stay in the very cheap (but
very adequate) on-site accommodation. There will be a conference dinner on
Tuesday evening, the cost of which will be 40 euros and it would be
helpful if you could let Nicole know whether you wish to attend this.

People wanting to speak should email Xavier Vasseur (vasseur@cerfacs.fr) with
a title and abstract (one page in plain text or LaTeX).

In memory of Gene Golub who attended many previous Sparse Days, the
meeting and dinner will have dedications to him and any speaker who
knew Gene is welcome to include remarks in his or her presentation.

The deadline for submitting abstracts for registering, and for requesting
cheap accommodation is May 23rd.

Subject: PostDoc, Visiting, and Research in Pairs Positions, CIRM in Trento

POSTDOC POSITIONS, VISITING POSITIONS AND RESEARCH IN PAIRS
AT THE CIRM (FONDAZIONE BRUNO KESSLER) IN TRENTO

In the course of the year 2007 the Istituto Trentino di Cultura was
transformed into a Foundation, the 'Fondazione Bruno Kessler'. The
CIRM (Centro Internazionale per la Ricerca Matematica), through its
new Comitato Direttivo, formed by:

Fabrizio Catanese (Bayreuth University), Director,
Luigi Ambrosio (Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa),
Marco Andreatta (Trento University),
Fritz Grunewald (Duesseldorf University),
Alberto Valli (Trento University),
Don Zagier (Max Planck Institut, Bonn and College de France, Paris),

took this transformation as an occasion to expand the spectrum of the
CIRM activities, held since many years in collaboration with the
University of Trento.

Next to the traditional activity, which has seen the CIRM organize
more than 210 mathematical Meetings and Conferences in the period
1979-2007, and the related editorial activity, which has seen the
publication of more than 50 research books and journal volumes, the
Comitato Direttivo set up a new range of activities, especially four
types of visiting positions with the intention of stimulating the
interaction between the mathematical research community of the Trento
area and the European and international mathematical community.

I) Postdoc Fellowships

The CIRM offers two annual Postdoc Fellowships for researches in the
field of Mathematics in the year 2008-2009. Each fellowship amounts to
Euro 23500 gross per year (taxes should be deducted), which will be
pro-rated in 12 monthly installments, and requires the presence in the
CIRM Institute (address Via Sommarive 14, Povo, Trento).

The applications must arrive not later than June 25th, 2008 at the
address Fondazione Bruno Kessler, Centro Internazionale per la Ricerca
Matematica, Via Sommarive n. 14 - Povo, 38100 Trento by ordinary mail
or via electronic mail to the address micheletti@fbk.eu.

The activities connected with the new enrollment, except for
particular requirements to be agreed upon with the winners, will start
within the month of September 2008; they should start in any case
within November 30th, 2008.

II) CIRM Visiting Professors and CIRM Visiting Scholars

CIRM Visiting Scholars will perform mathematical research in
cooperation with scientists and researchers of Trento University or,
more generally, of the Trento area, holding some research seminars;
CIRM Visiting Professors will hold short Ph.D. courses, or 'Summer
Courses', or series of seminars.

It is foreseen that the selection process for Visiting
Professors-Scholars take place through either

i) individual application, or

ii) invitation by a professor of Trento University or by a member of the
Comitato Direttivo.

In both cases, as a rule, the applications-proposals must be motivated
on the basis of cooperation or synergy with Mathematicians belonging
to Institutions which are related with Trento. Applications must be
sent to the address FBK, Centro Internazionale per la Ricerca
Matematica, Via Sommarive n. 14-Povo, 38100 Trento, Italy by ordinary
mail or via electronic mail to the address micheletti@fbk.eu.

Applications and proposals may be sent at any time.

Three levels of remuneration are foreseen, according to the corresponding
career level and the period of staying at CIRM:

Level I) Euro 3600 gross per month.
Level II) Euro 4300 gross per month.
Level III) Euro 5000 gross per month.

III) Research in Pairs

This type of program is similar to the one of the Mathematisches
Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach, and provides for the presence of two
or three partners from Universities located in different towns, who
intend to work on a definite research project and for a well specified
period of time (ranging from one to six weeks).

Applicant partners must submit a scientific project in the field of
mathematics, with a detailed research program, resulting in one or
more scientific publications in journals of excellent mathematical
level; the support of the CIRM will then be acknowledged in the
resulting publications.

Participants in the RIP Program will have their living expenses (full
board and lodging) fully paid by CIRM and will possibly get an
insurance covering their activity inside the CIRM offices. As a rule,
travel expenses will not be reimbursed, except in exceptional cases.

Applications must be sent to the address FBK, Centro Internazionale
per la Ricerca Matematica, Via Sommarive n. 14-Povo, 38100 Trento, by
ordinary mail or possibly via electronic mail to the address
micheletti@fbk.eu.
