Subject: Zbigniew Woznicki
Zbigniew Woznicki (Institute of Atomic Energy of Poland) passed away early
morning on Saturday 1 March as the result of a mesenteric embolism leaving
his wife Ewa and two daughters Agnieszka and Ola. Together with Varga, van
der Vorst and Jennings, he was one of the fathers of the incomplete
factorization algorithms and of the associated iterative methods. His PhD
thesis published in 1973, although at the beginning not appropriately
acknowledged, represented a true breakthrough in the development of these
methods as well as in the general theory of regular splitting, paving way to
countless extensions and leading to many present day applications of ILU
factorization algorithms and of their numerous variants. His recent works
included the use of the iterative solution of large linear problems arising
in the field of control system design and analysis. The community of matrix
iterative analysts lost one of its most prominent members. We, his
colleagues, lost a warm and devoted friend.

The Texas Advanced Computing Center, in association with the Jackson
School for Geosciences at The University of Texas at Austin, is pleased to
present the second annual Scientific Software Days. The purpose of the
event is to increase communication among scientific software users,
vendors, and service providers.
May 15th will be a day of science-oriented presentations.
On May 16, there will be two half day tutorials presented:
- Representatives of IBM Corp. will present the Eclipse platform and its use
in parallel programming,
- Representatives of Enthought Inc. will talk about the use of Python in
scientific computing.
CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS
The opening day of the Scientific Software Days will be devoted to
short presentations about available software packages and
technologies. We would like to invite you to present your work to the
scientific computing community on that day.
Contributed presentations should focus on software and its use in
scientific computing. You may be the author of the software, or simply
an expert user: if you think it deserves broader exposure, here is
your platform. We are also interested in case studies, especially
discussions on how supercomputing enabled your work, the challenges and
benefits of the supercomputing environment, scaling and validation
issues, and other aspects of your strategies that might be of broad
interest.
Presentations will be 30 minutes in duration, of which at least 5
minutes should be left for questions. If you are interested in

While object-oriented programming is being embraced in industry,
particularly in the form of C++ and to an increasing extent Java and
Python, its acceptance by the parallel scientific programming community
is still tentative. In this latter domain performance is invariably of
paramount importance, where even C++ is considered suspect, primarily
because of real or perceived loss of performance. On the other hand,
various factors practically dictate the use of language features that
provide higher level abstractions than do C or older FORTRAN standards.
These include increasingly complex physics models, numerical algorithms,
and hardware--deep memory hierarchies, exponentially-increasing numbers
of processors, and the advent of multi- and many-core processors and
heterogeneous architectures.
This workshop seeks to bring together practitioners and researchers in
this growing field to `compare notes' on their work. The emphasis is on
identifying specific problems impeding greater acceptance and widespread
use of object-oriented programming in scientific computing; proposed and
implemented solutions to these problems; and new or novel approaches,
techniques or idioms for scientific and/or parallel computing.
Presentations of work in progress are welcome.

Postdoctoral position in multiscale modeling at RPI, USA
There is an opening for a postdoctoral research position in the
Advanced Computational Research Laboratory at RPI, Troy, NY (USA) .to
work on an ongoing project sponsored by the Office of Naval
Research. The project involves the multiscale modeling of particulate
composites under extreme loading conditions. This is a great
opportunity to be involved in challenging multiscale computational
techniques based on meshfree methods. Encouraged to apply are
creative, self-motivated candidates with a sound background in
computational mechanics.
Qualifications:
1. PhD in Computational/Applied Mechanics or related field
2. Sound background in continuum Mechanics
3. Sound background in nonlinear finite element analysis or or
meshfree or generalized finite element techniques.
4. Prior experience in multiscale modeling is a plus.
5. Exerience in large scale computational code development in C++
necessary
6. Experience in code development on massively parallel systems
highly desirable

Subject: PostDoc Position in European Research Training Network COMSON
COMSON (COupled Multiscale Simulation and Optimization in Nanoelectronics) is
a Marie Curie Research Training Network supported by the European Commission
in the framework of the programme ``Structuring the European Research Area"
within the 6th Framework Research Programme of the European Union. It was
established on October 1st, 2005, and will run for a total of four years.
Within COMSON, one position as experienced researcher (ER) at a
postdoc level is available for 18 months, starting April 2008. A
prolongation of the contract beyond the end of COMSON in October 2009
is possible (employment as "Akademischer Rat auf Zeit" - A13 level).
This researcher at ER level will be involved in developing the
demonstrator platform and contribute to simulator coupling for partial
differential-algebraic systems, under the supervision of Dr. Georg
Denk (Qimonda AG Munich) and Prof. Michael Guenther (Bergische
Universitaet Wuppertal). This position will be located at the Campeon
Site of Qimonda AG in Neubiberg nearby Munich.

Postdoctoral Instructorships
Department of Computational and Applied Mathematics,
Rice University
The Department of Computational and Applied Mathematics, www.caam.rice.edu,
invites applications for postdoctoral instructorships including
Pfeiffer-VIGRE Instructorships. All instructors in the Department are
appointed for two academic years, with possible extension for a third year.
The term of appointment may begin at any time after July 1, 2008. Candidates
should have received a PhD within 18 months preceding the time of
appointment and have demonstrated potential for excellence in both research
and teaching. Candidates must be US citizens or permanent residents.
Instructors teach one lecture course each semester, and conduct research in
collaboration with a faculty mentor. The Pfeiffer-VIGRE Instructorships
honor Professor Emeritus Paul Pfeiffer, a founding member of the department,
and are a component of the Rice VIGRE program. Pfeiffer-VIGRE instructors
work with a team of faculty and graduate and undergraduate students in one
of the VIGRE research areas. Research areas currently targeted for these
appointments, including Pfeiffer-VIGRE instructorships, include mathematical
biology, inverse problems, and numerical solution of partial differential
equations.
Rice University is a private research university with a long tradition of
excellence in undergraduate and graduate science and engineering education.
The Department of Computational and Applied Mathematics hosts research
