A Test Problem Collection in PDE-Constrained Optimization

At the recent IMA workshop Optimization in Simulation-Based Models
it was suggested to make samples of such problems available. Based
on recent own research I had already done some of that. For easier

Announcing the winners of the Association for Women in Mathematics Essay
Contest on Biographies of Contemporary Women in Mathematics:

To increase awareness of women's ongoing contributions to the mathematical
sciences, the Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) and the
Simulation Enabled Product Realization Program at Sandia National Labs
sponsored an essay contest on biographies of contemporary women
mathematicians and statisticians in academic, industrial, and government
careers.

The Grand Prize this year went to Alyssa Chase, of Townsend Harris High
School in Flushing, New York. Her winning essay was "Peggy Tang Strait: A
Pioneer in Uncharted Territory."

SECOND ANNOUNCEMENT, IWOTA 2003

In this second announcement we present some updated information on the
Fourteenth International Workshop on Operator Theory and Applications
(IWOTA 2003), organized at the University of Cagliari, Sardinia,
Italy, from Tuesday June 24 to Friday June 27, 2003.

PURPOSE OF IWOTA 2003 AND SPECIAL SESSIONS. The purpose of IWOTA 2003
is to bring together mathematicians and engineers interested in
operator theory and applications. Adhering to a tradition started at
the Faro and Blacksburg meetings, the meeting will be focussed on a
few special themes, without losing sight of the general IWOTA mission.
Our special interest areas, suggested by research existing at the
University of Cagliari and at other Italian universities, are
* structured matrices,
* inverse scattering,
* control theory.

Apart from that, we will welcome proposals on special sessions
involving other traditional IWOTA areas. As a matter of fact, special
sessions on numerical estimates for operators (organized by N.K.
Nikolski of Bordeaux), pseudodifferential operators (organized by
Luigi Rodino of the University of Torino), interpolation theory
(organized by Joe Ball of Virginia Tech and Victor Vinnikov of the
Weizmann Institute), and reproducing kernel space methods in sampling
(organized by Zuhair Nashed of Central Florida University) have been
approved. Special sessions on structured matrices, inverse scattering,
and control theory will be included shortly. To organize a special
session (of 6-8 30 minute talks and maybe a 45 minute talk), you
should submit a (not more than one page) proposal to the Scientific
Committee by sending an e-mail to the following address:
iwota-scicom@bugs.unica.it. Approval of any such a proposal is at the
discretion of the Scientific Committee, given enough room in the
program to accommodate the session.

The workshop aims at bringing together researchers and practitioners
to discuss recent developments in computational methods for decision
making and design. The workshop will cover computational methods and
tools for decision and control in economics, finance, management and
engineering. This is intended to include areas such as data mining,
management science/operations research, econometrics, statistics,
computer science, numerical methods, engineering decision and design
problems such as control systems, process systems, power systems and
energy production.

Papers are solicited that deal significantly with computational
aspects of such topics as: linear and nonlinear systems, econometrics,
statistics, stochastic control, automatic differentiation, nonlinear
model solution methods, mathematical programming algorithms,
variational inequality and other algorithms for computing equilibria,
algorithmic models of decision making including genetic algorithms,
auction modeling, neural networks, artificial intelligence,
computability and complexity theory, parallel and supercomputing,
qualitative reasoning and models including qualitative simulation.

Tutorials will take place the 28th of March 2002.

Special Issue:

o Peer review papers will be considered for publication in a special
issue of the journal Computational Management Science (URL:

o Papers containing a strong computational statistics component will

Subject: Postdoctoral Positions at University of Maryland

The Center for Scientific Computation And Mathematical Modeling (CSCAMM)
invites applications for post-doctoral Research Associates positions to
join the research program of the Center. The newly established Center
was created as a 'major impact' project by the University of Maryland
College Park (UMCP) to address the growing impact of coupling
computations with modeling in diverse scientific fields. The primary
goal of CSCAMM is to foster research activity which highlights the
interaction between scientific computation and mathematical modeling as
complementary avenues to theory and experiments. Recent examples for
such successful interactions could be found in multi-scale modeling and
simulations of atmospheric-oceanic dynamics, nano-structures, protein
folding and turbulence and transport in fluids and plasma.

To promote its interdisciplinary goal, CSCAMM sponsors an active
visitors program through a series of international workshops and
conferences. In addition, CSCAMM supports an educational program through
active involvement with the new UMCP Applied Mathematics and Scientific
Computation graduate program. More about CSCAMM can be found at

Successful applicants are expected to have a strong component of their
research devoted to the development and implementation of novel
computational algorithms. CSCAMM will encourage interdisciplinary
collaboration with leading local scholars for whom computation is an

successful applicants will enjoy involvement with CSCAMM visitors'
program, and access to CSCAMM high end computing facilities.

Appointments are for two years and the applicants might arrange a
reduced teaching load of one semester course per year. Salary range is
$42,000-$47,000 with additional $4000 for support of the incumbent's
research program.
