The Japanese supercomputer market is fairly well balanced between domestic and foreign manufacturers as far as the number of TOP500 entries is concerned. There are 51 systems from Japanese manufacturers and 31 systems from foreign vendors. Certainly the situation in Japan is more balanced than in the US, where the Japanese vendors only managed to install 3 systems out of a total of 246. On the other hand we can observe that the most powerful systems installed in Japan come from Japanese vendors. The reason could be that the Japanese vendors offer more performance for an attractive price, but it also could mean that a larger part of the procurement budgets goes to Japanese manufacturers.
