Subject: Argonne Parallel Programming Class

Argonne National Laboratory has set up an Advanced Computing
Research Facility (ACRF) for the study of parallel computing. It
currently features an 8-processor Alliant FX/8, a 20-processor
Encore Multimax, a 24-processor Sequent Balance 21000, a 32-processor
Intel iPSC hypercube, a 16-processor Intel iPSC-VX hypercube with
vector processors and a 1024-processor Active Memory Technology DAP.
Local projects utilizing the ACRF include investigations in parallel
logic programming and parallel linear algebra and the development of
portable parallel programming methodologies.

To encourage the use of the ACRF as a national facility, Argonne
is sponsoring classes to familiarize potential users with the ACRF
multiprocessors and parallel programming in general. The next classes
will be held on March 2-4, 1988 and April 27-29, 1988.

Topics to be covered include parallelizing compilers, the Monitor
and Schedule packages for portable parallel programming, hypercube
programming and programming the DAP. A portion of the third day will
be devoted to consideration of each attendee's particular project.
Fortran will be emphasized as the primary programming language. This
will be a hands-on class; at its completion participants will have
written and run programs on each machine, and should be familiar with
the ACRF environment.

The Mathematical Software Group at Cray Research, Inc.

for several numerical analysts to conduct algorithm development
and implementation of numerical software for both current and
future Cray machines. The Mathematical Software Group goal is
to provide a central place of expertise for vector and parallel
numerical algorithm development for Cray Research and to provide

Subject: Old "Supercomputer" for Sale

We have a CDC Cyber 760 for immediate sale. We purchased it new in 1979
and have been it's sole owner; it hasn't even been moved except around
new year's to roll it into our store-room. We paid CDC to dis-assemble
it, so it should run fine for any new owner. Purchase for spare parts
is also fine with us, we're just interested in highest bid. This is a
fine old "supercomputer" from before the invention of that phrase.
Specifically, 1 760 CPU with full 256 K (60-bit) words of CM, a full PP
chassis (20 PPs), a CC545 console, 10-ton condenser, 512K ECS, and other
related items (TMPC, etc.). We have no peripherals to sell at the moment
but we do also have a Cyber 840 we will phase out by the end of 1988.

Recent Trends in Nonlinear Computational Mathematics and Mechanics

A conference in honor of Werner C. Rheinboldt on the occasion of his
sixtieth birthday is to be held at the Institute for Computational
Mathematics and Applications, University of Pittsburgh on March 9,
10, and 11, 1988.

The conference will focus on recent results on the computation of
solutions to problems in fluid and solid mechanics, areas of great
importance to the aerospace, nuclear, automotive, petroleum and
electronic industries. Special emphasis will be placed on algorithms
and analyses that deal with nonlinear aspects. Contributed papers
are invited in areas consistent with the conference themes. SIAM has
indicated an interest in publishing the conference proceedings.
