Subject: Karl Strehmel (1934 - 2023)


On 12 December 2023, our highly esteemed colleague Karl Strehmel,
university professor and founder of the NUMDIFF conference series,
passed away after a short, serious illness.

Karl Strehmel was a great mathematician and scientist who, even in
times of German and European division, worked with great commitment
and skill to promote international scientific cooperation that
transcended borders. In the early 1980s, he founded the "Numerical
Treatment of Differential Equations" seminars, which have since
brought together many leading international experts in this field at
the NUMDIFF conferences at Martin Luther University. We will
commemorate him at NUMDIFF-17 in September 2024.

We remember with gratitude an academic teacher who opened up new
horizons and inspired enthusiasm for his field.

(NUMA), Fast and Stable Roots of Polynomials via Companion Matrices
Tuesday February 6, 2024, 5pm

We present a fast and stable algorithm for computing roots of
polynomials. The roots are found by computing the eigenvalues of the
associated companion matrix. A companion matrix is an upper Hessenberg
matrix that is of unitary-plus-rank-one form, that is, it is the sum
of a unitary matrix and a rank-one matrix. When running Francis's
implicitly-shifted QR algorithm this property is preserved, and
exactly that is exploited here. To compactly store the matrix we will
show that only 3n-1 rotators are required, so the storage space is
O(n). In fact, these rotators only represent the unitary part, but we
will show that we can retrieve the rank-one part from the unitary part
with a trick. It is thus not necessary to store the rank-one part
explicitly. Francis's algorithm tuned for working on this
representation requires only O(n) flops per iteration and thus O(n^2)
flops in total. The algorithm is normwise backward stable and is shown
to be about as accurate as the (slow) Francis QR algorithm applied to
the companion matrix without exploiting the structure. It is also
faster than other O(n^2) methods that have been proposed, and its
accuracy is comparable or better.

prize in 2017.

Big data sets and increasing complexities of models pose significant
computational obstacles for many applications. Current cutting-edge
inference methods are reaching their limits and it is crucial to
develop advanced tools to extract meaningful insights from data.

The summer school aims to equip students with a comprehensive
understanding of the mathematical, computational, and statistical
tools necessary for analyzing large-scale data sets and solving
inverse problems. By introducing state-of-the-art techniques in
randomized Numerical Linear Algebra (RandNLA) and exploring the
connection between RandNLA and inverse problems, students will develop
a solid foundation for further study and perform research in the
computational sciences. Attending the summer school provides a unique
opportunity to discover the vast opportunities that come with

The Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) at Lehigh
University is thrilled to announce the opening of the 16th AIMMS-MOPTA
Optimization Modeling Competition.

The competition is organized by the conference organizers of MOPTA and
AIMMS. The first phase's submission deadline is May 1, 2024, 23:59
Eastern Time. Finalists are expected to attend and present their
results at the 2024 MOPTA Conference to be held on August 14-16, 2024,
at Lehigh University, Bethlehem, PA, USA.

The goal of the competition this year is to analyze renewable energy

Information on eligibility, registration, submission, and competition
format are posted on the competition website. Teams of at most three
students can participate and should list a faculty advisor. The team
leader must be a graduate student, though the other team members can

institution during the Spring term of the 2023-2024 Academic
Year. Students with any background are eligible. Collaboration between
students from different departments is strongly encouraged. Each
finalist team will receive free registration for the conference for up
to two team members. As the conference is international, so is the
competition. Teams from all over the world can participate, as long as
at least one team member can come to the conference, should the team
make it to the final round. The official language of the competition

The Atmospheric Sciences Group in the Department of Geosciences at
Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX, seeks a Postdoctoral Research
Associate to work in the area of fire weather prediction. The
successful candidate will be part of the Modeling and Predictability
Group supervised by Dr. Brian Ancell and will serve a two-year
appointment working on a project funded by the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The primary goal of the position
will be to contribute to the development of a novel, probabilistic,
machine learning- based fire weather index, the significant fire
parameter, toward operational use at the National Weather Service
(NWS).

Duties will include performing simulations with atmospheric
convection- allowing models (CAMs), development of machine learning
techniques that relate model simulations to past fire data, and
research -to- operations activities with NWS forecast offices and the
Storm Prediction Center (SPC). Required qualifications include
computer programming and analysis experience with languages such as
Python, Fortran, or equivalent. Preferred qualifications include
familiarity running CAMs such as WRF, UFS, and MPAS, experience with
machine learning algorithms, and prior work with fire weather
prediction. The position will require some travel and participation in
NOAA testbed activities.

SkBodowska-Curie Doctoral Network / Joint Doctorate (2024-2027),
offering 15 PhD positions starting from September 2024. The objective
of TENORS is to conduct advanced research that addresses critical
challenges in the fields of tensor modeling and computation, joining
forces from algebraic geometry, global optimisation, numerical
computation, high performance computing, data science, quantum
physics.

One position in TENORS is around low-rank representations of numerical
solutions of high-dimensional partial differential operators, for use
in modeling and optimization. In particular we aim at accelerating
isogeometric discretizations that are based on tensor-product or
hierarchical splines. Solving using grid-based methods suffers from
the, so called, curse of dimensionality and scales badly with the
number of knots in the spline representation. We will tackle this
problem using tensor decomposition by means of the moment method. The
problem discretization will be carried out using tensor-product spline
bases, enhanced by the use of low-rank approximation of the
computational domain and the numerical solution. Consequently, the
computational complexity of the method will depend on the resulting
tensor rank and will be linear in the grid dimensions. In a second
phase the discretization will be enriched using hierarchical splines,
for localizing the problem and for gaining efficiency in high
dimensional instances

The candidate will work at INRIA at Universite Cote d'Azur in Sophia
Antipolis, and will spend one semester at the University of Florence
as well as few months at Artelys Paris.

Position: We are looking for a Ph.D. student in applied mathematics to
work on an interdisciplinary project. The student would be situated in
the School of Mathematics at Trinity College Dublin supervised by
Professor Kirk M. Soodhalter. The overarching project is
multidisciplinary (with collaboraton with biomedical engineering
teams) and focuses on the analysis of the brain activity and
connectivity in health and disease, but this Ph.D. position is focused
on the mathematical component (applied linear algebra/ill-posed
problems/image and signal reconstruction and iterative methods to
treat these problems) and requires an applicant with a strong applied
mathematical background, with the goal of earning a Ph.D. in
mathematics.

Candidate: Eligible candidates for the position must have a Masters or
equivalent degree in mathematics. The candidate is expected to have a
solid background in applied mathematics with experience in numerical
analysis, numerical PDEs, integral equations, multivariate
statistics/linear algebra, and inverse problems. Having done a masters
thesis, bachelors project, or other such work in inverse problems,
numerical linear algebra, numerical analysis or a related field would
be an asset, and strong consideration will be given to such
candidates.

positions. One position is in the NUMA unit at the Department of

the ICTEAM institute at the Mathematical Engineering Departement,
UCLouvain, Belgium. We seek candidates with a Master's degree in
Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Data Science, and/or (Applied)
Mathematics, broadly defined.

The PhD candidates will carry out fundamental scientific research on
the NTTN project of professors E. Massart (UCLouvain) and N.
Vannieuwenhoven (KU Leuven). This project will develop new machine
learning models and corresponding training algorithms to tackle two
current challenges in data science: growing primary energy consumption
and proliferation of biases in training data. We aim to tackle these
fundamental challenges through an interesting blend of deep learning,
tensor decompositions, Riemannian optimization, and representation
theory.

Applications will be considered as soon as we receive them. The
procedure may be closed earlier than the final application date (March
26, 2024) in case 2 excellent candidates have been found. Some
flexibility in the starting date of the position is possible, but it

We are organizing an NSF-funded REU (Research Experiences for
Undergraduates) Site program at UMBC: Online Interdisciplinary Big
Data Analytics in Science and Engineering. It is a purely online
program open to students from the entire nation. The 8-week program
will include training in fundamentals of HPC software (MPI) and
productivity tools (SLURM) on large distributed-memory clusters with
CPUs and GPUs as well as Data Analytics applications like Tensorflow,
Keras, PyTorch, Horovod. Each student will be paid a stipend of
$5,600 for participation and provided with opportunities to present
their work at conferences. We are looking for students from all STEM
disciplines and particularly also for students who are interested in
gaining Big Data, HPC, and application experience.

The two project topics planned for summer 2023 are
(1) Artificial Intelligence and Big Data Research for Earth Applications;

supported by a dedicated graduate assistant and will publish a
