The workshop on "Mathematics of Deep Learning" will take place on 3-5
December at the WIAS Berlin. It aims to provide a topical view on
recent advances regarding mathematical aspects of popular machine

learning. While the focus lies on theoretical and conceptual research
of network representations, contributions concerned with practical
aspects and non-standard methods are also welcome.

We are organizing a workshop on Interplay of discretization and
algebraic solvers: a posteriori error estimates and adaptivity. It
will take place March 30 - April 1 2020 at Inria Paris.

Main topics are a posteriori error estimates and adaptivity for
numerical discretizations of partial differential equations, linear
algebraic solvers, and particularly their interplay (stopping
criteria, design of adaptive h or p refinement under inexact solvers,
design of algebraic solvers on hp grids), as well as h and p
robustness and material properties robustness.

The Department of Mathematics at NC State University has an open
postdoctoral position under its NSF funded Research Training Group
RTG, DMS-1745654 in Randomized Numerical Analysis. The position is
restricted to US citizens, nationals and permanent residents. The
postdoctoral associate must hold a Ph.D. in mathematics or a closely
related discipline awarded after January 1, 2018. An exception to this
rule, occasioned for instance by a career interruption, may be
requested in the cover letter.

The postdoctoral associate is expected to engage in research related
to at least one of the three complementary research thrusts of the
project in randomized numerical linear algebra, random nonlinear
solvers and global sensitivity analysis. Strengths in applied
probability, numerical analysis, and scientific computing are an
asset. Based on background, experience, and interests, the postdoc
will be assigned one research mentor from the faculty associated with
the RTG: Alen Alexanderian, Pierre Gremaud, Ilse Ipsen, Tim Kelley,
Arvind Saibaba and Ralph Smith. An academic mentor will be chosen from
this group to oversee the postdoc's training and professional
development. The postdoc will also play a leading role in mentoring
students associated with some of the project's working groups; he/she
will be expected to assist in organizing seminars and activities
related to the general research of the RTG. In addition, the postdoc
will teach on average one course per semester in the Department of
Mathematics.

This position is for a term of up to three years, contingent upon
performance. The anticipated starting date is August 2020; there is
however some flexibility. The 11-month salary of $62,500 includes
summer support. In addition, the postdoc will be given an annual
travel budget of $3,000.

This 2-year post-doctoral position is funded by the ANR JCJC project
O- TO-TT-FU. The main objectives of this project are the development
and the study of new mathematical and numerical methods to solve
topology optimization problems, which are PDE-constrained optimization
problems, for convective heat transfer in fluid flows.

The scientific program will start by studying topology optimization
problem targeting solid material with anisotropic and/or
spatially-varying thermal conductivity. A second task will aim to
design and analysis parallel-in-time numerical schemes for topology
optimization problem for unsteady flows.

This position is expected to start at 01/01/2020 or earlier but has a
flexible start date. There is also no teaching requirements.
