CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS - SIAM Student Paper Prize - Deadline February 15

The SIAM STUDENT PAPER PRIZE is awarded every year to the student
author(s) of the most outstanding paper(s) submitted to the SIAM Student
Paper Competition. This award is based solely on the merit and content
of the student's contribution to the submitted paper. The prize
recognizes outstanding scholarship by students in applied mathematics or
scientific computing. Up to three submissions will be awarded.

The SIAM Student Paper Prize will be awarded at the SIAM Annual Meeting,
July 7-11, 2008, in San Diego, California. Each prize recipient will
receive a framed certificate plus a cash award of $1,000 and will have
the opportunity to present his or her paper at the meeting. Recipients
also receive $500 toward travel expenses and gratis registration for the
meeting.

Eligibility is restricted to students in good standing who do not yet
hold the degree of PhD on the application deadline. Papers entered in
the competition must have already been submitted for publication.
Submissions may be based on co-authored papers. Instructions on how to
submit a paper and other required documents can be found at
http://www.siam.org/prizes/nominations/nom_student.php.

All papers and accompanying documentation must be received at the SIAM
office on or before February 15, 2008. Please address your submission
to the SIAM Student Paper Prize Committee, Chair, Professor William L.
Briggs and send it to J. M. Littleton at littleton@siam.org. Inquiries

Subject: New book: The Science of Programming Matrix Computations

We are happy to announce the availability of our new book

Robert A. van de Geijn and Enrique S. Quintana-Orti. The Science of
Programming Matrix Computations. www.lulu.com. 2008.

In this book, we show how developing high-performance linear algebra
algorithms and implementations can be made extremely systematic. By
adopting a new notation for expressing algorithms, families of
loop-based algorithms for a given matrix operation can be systematically
derived. Application Programming Interfaces for C and M-script allow
the resulting algorithms to be represented in code. The methodology
makes this important subject accessible to novice and expert alike.

There are many ways that this book can be of value:

- It is a primer for those who want to study our FLAME project.

- It has been successfully used to bring undergraduates and graduate
students up to speed on high-performance libraries.

- It is priced so that it can be used as a supplement to a traditional
course on numerical linear algebra.

This book is currently only available from www.lulu.com. We are trying
to see how we can minimize the cost of the book while maximizing the
audience that we reach. Our first attempt is to only publish so that it
is only available directly from www.lulu.com (direct link:
http://www.lulu.com/content/1911788.) A single copy costs $8.34 +
shipping (be sure to use USPS media shipping) = $12.12, for a book of
143 pages. It is available in Europe for 6.71 euros + shipping. Bulk
rates are available. To keep cost down, we are not even charging
royalties: you pay for printing and shipping, period.

We look forward to feedback on the book itself, and our method of
publishing it.

Regards,
Robert van de Geijn
Enrique Quintana
