ISSAC 2006 Call for Posters and Software Exhibitions

ISSAC is the yearly premier international symposium in Symbolic and
Algebraic Computation. It provides an opportunity to learn of new
developments and to present original research results in all areas of
symbolic mathematical computation. In parallel to peer reviewed research
papers, ISSAC organizes sessions for Posters and Software Exhibitions.

ISSAC 2006 will be held from July 9 to 12 in Genova, Italy.

Call for Posters

The poster sessions are an ideal venue for presenting recent research
results or ongoing research projects that might not yet be complete, but
whose preliminary results are already interesting nonetheless. Posters on

algebra systems and applications are also especially welcome.

Call for Software Exhibitions

This year ISSAC organizes sessions to exhibit software packages produced
by academic developers. These sessions are intended to promote software
development activities in the areas of symbolic mathematical computation.
A software exhibitions session consists of an illustration of a piece of
software by using a poster display and/or a laptop computer display.

IMA NEW DIRECTIONS SHORT COURSE
Biophysical Fluid Dynamics

Application deadline: April 1, 2006.

From June 19-30, 2006 the Institute for Mathematics and its
Applications (IMA) will host an intensive short course designed to
efficiently provide researchers in the mathematical sciences and related
disciplines the basic knowledge prerequisite to undertake research in
fluid dynamics relevant to the biological realm. The course will be
taught by Michael J. Shelley, Professor of Mathematics at the Courant
Institute, NYU, and Raymond E. Goldstein, Professor of Physics and
Applied Mathematics, at the University of Arizona. The primary audience
for the course is mathematics faculty. No prior background in fluid
dynamics or biophysics is expected.

Participants will receive full travel and lodging support during the
workshop.

The course will begin with an introduction to hydrodynamically mediated
transport phenomena in biology across a broad range of scales, from
micro- to macroscopic. This will be followed by lectures on basic
incompressible fluid dynamics, flexible and biological materials, and
their mutual coupling. The course will then pursue two overlapping
tracks: Michael J. Shelley will lead discussions on the modeling,
computation, and analysis of fluid-body interactions, what we learn from
such models, basic mechanisms of biological locomotion, and the modeling
of soft active materials. Raymond E. Goldstein will lead discussions on
biophysical applications and modeling, especially at the micro-scale,
including the dynamic flagella, chemotaxis, microscale stirring and
locomotion and their relation to biological viability. Both lecturers
will discuss experiments and models on large-scale dynamic coherence in
biological systems. A typical day during this two week course will
consist of two general lectures by the principal speakers in the
morning, each one-and-a-half hours in duration. Afternoons will be used
for topical lectures by guest speakers, and for problem solving and
brain-storming sessions.

Special session: "Large-scale Computations in Environmental Modelling"

Organizers: Krassimir Georgiev, Per Grove Thomsen and Zahari Zlatev

We are organizing this special session within the Sixth International
Conference on Numerical Methods and Applications, NMA06, to be held in
Borovetz, Bulgaria, August 20-24, 2006.

Large mathematical models can successfully be used in different
environmental studies. As in many other fields of science and
engineering, these models are described by systems of differential
equations. The application of different kinds of discretization +
splitting leads to the solution of huge computational problems. The
treatment of these problems is difficult even when powerful modern
computers are available. Therefore, it is necessary to perform the
following actions:
(a) to select fast and sufficiently accurate numerical methods,
(b) to apply advanced splitting procedures,
(c) to parallelize the code
and
(d) to utilize properly the cache memory of the computer used.

Moreover , in cases where measurements are available, data assimilation
can often be worthwhile as a means of improving the reliability of the
results.

This short analysis explains why the major topics chosen by us for this
special session are:
1. numerical methods for solving differential equations,
2. splitting procedures for large mathematical models,
3. development of parallel devices,
4. using partitioning of the codes in order to achieve better
exploitation of the cache memory
5. data assimilation techniques and
6. treatment of real-life studies from the area of environmentalscience.

We shall be very happy if you and/or some of your colleagues can join us
and contribute a talk in this session. The papers based on the talks in
this special session will be included (after referee procedure) in the
conference proceedings, which will be published by Springer.We are,
furthermore, considering the possibility to publish extended papers,
containing more results, in a scientific journal (again, after a regular
referee procedure).

Subject: Postdoctoral and Ph. D. Positions at Ashton University

POSTDOC: 3 years, 5 months

We are looking for an outstanding postdoctoral research fellow to work
on the VISDEM project, a collaboration between Aston, Southampton,
Surrey Universities and the Met Office. The VISDEM project will look at
the creation of novel frameworks for data assimilation (combining
partial differential euqation based model with observations, i.e. better
Kalman filtering / smoothing for non-linear systems) and will extend
recently developed methods from statistical physics and machine learning
to large stochastic dynamic systems.

Working with Dr Dan Cornford, and a project student at Aston, you will
take the theoretical developments from the Southampton team, led by
Professor Manfred Opper and Professor John Shaw-Taylor, and apply these
to a range of realistic stochastic dynamic models which have similar
properties to real atmospheric models. In particular you will assist in
creating a novel variational Bayesian approach to inference within
realistic stochastic dynamic models. You will develop novel
computational methods for space-time Gaussian processes, and also apply
these to real systems, including the case with state dependent
(multiplicative) model error. You will also work on the development of
the hyper-parameter estimation for unknowns such as the variance of the
forcing noise that arises from model error.

The project is ambitious and exciting; we have a strong team and are
looking for an experienced and highly motivated researcher to take the
project forward. Applicants should have excellent mathematical and
computational skills and be able to communicate effectively. A
background in theoretical physics, mathematics, machine learning or
equivalent is required.

The post holder is expected to start on or before the 1 August 2006. The
post is fixed term for 3 years 5 months.

Institut de Chimie
et de la Matière Condensée de Bordeaux

the Laboratoire de Thermique Energétique et Procédés
(http://www.univ-pau.fr/latep/)
and the Centre Interuniversitaire de Recherhce et d’Ingénierie des
Matériaux
(http://cirimat.ensiacet.fr/) for their proposal on the study of
synthesis
of ferroelectrics nanoparticles of BaTiO3 coated with Al2O3 in
supercritical fluids..

Some previous studies have already been performed and have shown the
possibility to produce nanoparticles of BaTiO3 in a continuous way [1]
and, on the other side, to coat such particles with a nanoscaled layer
of Al2O3 [2].
In order to enhance this process, it is necessary to construct a
mathematical model able to predict the particles size distribution of
the nanoparticles at the output of the reactor, given a set of operating
conditions. Some studies have already been performed in order to compute
such a particle size distribution in the case of supercritical oxidation
of solid particles [3], [4].

During a period of one year, the post doc:
- Will have to build a model able to compute the PSD at the output of
the reactor. Interaction between the flow-field and the mechanism
responsible for growth of the particles will have to be included within
this model
- Validate the model on the facility available at ICMCB

During its stay in France, the post doc will have to stay in Pau and in
Bordeaux in order to complete the project. In Pau, he will be assisted
by Frédéric Marias in order to build the model. In Bordeaux, he will be
assisted by Cyril Aymonier in order to make some experiments on the
available device. Moreover, during its period in Bordeaux, the Post Doc
will be helped by students (of final year) from the Chemical Engineering
school of Pau (ENSGTI)
